Before I buy a Spot.
It looks like there is a much cheaper annual tracking pckage for the 2 than the newer 3.
49 euros vs 149
Am I wrong?

I'll jog my memory from my emails but if its for the odd trip, you can use mine. (as long as i'm not using it)

Also, purchase price can be had at a discount from a nice man from on here. I'll send you his details.

Both 2 and 3 need a subscription
I think its $149 for gen 3 service plan which includes tracking

I think its $99 for spot messenger, no tracking, just sos etc. +$49 for tracking

I might be wrong, I'll check my emails as someone helped me at the time (last xmas)

fwiw, I got the gen 3 as it takes rechargeable batteries, gen 2 does not

That's about right. Gen3 forces you to take tracking with the subscription while gen2 does not. But same price if you buy tracking on gen2.

From what I've heard Gen3 lasts longer on a set of batteries too.

From what i have read about these, the Gen 3 also has a lot of bug fixes and new more accurate signal.
If i was going somewhere i would need to use one of these spots i would want the best.
My life is worth more to me than £50-£100 costs for the newer one. - Thats just personally.

My wallet says, the Gen 2 was good enough 2 years ago so why not, and you save a little money on the unit (not on the Tracking fees etc)

I want the Stop messenger so i can connect to my smart phone and update my Facebook with post of how my trips going.
Also can ask for help through Facebook etc if you have a problem not big enough to hit the SOS button.

The Gen3 extends battery life by pausing transmission whilst stationary. Seems like a pretty useful "tweak".

I've got the Spot3 and been well impressed with battery life. You can borrow and try out if you want Rich

Thanks folks.

I hired a 3 this year, and it seemed to do an OK job.

I'm only after one as I'll need the tracking for the HTR so there seems no advantage whatsoever in buying a 2 unless I come across one for pennies fro what you all say.

I'm hoping you'll all be riding the HTR so will be unable to lend me yours.

The spot has another button you can hit to send a message that would be the equivalent of this. Pre set email to a contact.

If you have a phone signal. The beauty of the Spot system is that it works even when a phone signal is not present (let alone a mobile Internet signal)

I think the spot takes the message from the phone and forwards it on.

Yep the spot messanger connects to a smart phone by bluetooth.
it lets you update twitter facebook etc via its satellite connection so you can keep in touch when you dont have a phone signal.
