New tyre time

Hi folks,

Rear wheel is starting to look a little tired... so looking to replace it.

I have a Geax Saguaro TNT (26er) running tubeless at the moment and I'm really happy with it, they roll really fast, its not been the tyres fault when I have lost grip... and they are tubeless ready. But, you need the strength of a bear to get the things on and off the wheel.

So I can just replace like for like, or try something a little different.

Will the non tubeless specific tyres run alright tubeless??

Big fan of Race and X Kings but if you want to run tubeless I'd look somewhere else ... unless they do a tubeless ready version.

Saguaro non-TNTs are the most TLR non-TLR tyre I've used and go on/off easily, can be re-seated trailside no bother. Not as tough as some other heavier tyres but a great and under-rated all-round fast tyre.
Not been so impressed with Schwalbe MTB tyres in general, their TLR don't seem to seat at all easily and the snakeskin versions lack durability compared to something like an EXO Maxxis. Conti racesport models are TLR, not tried them tho.

The mountain king is a bit OTT for rear use in my opinion and quite draggy. I have had a non tubeless continental x king 2.4 set up tubeless on the front for three months no problem. Race king is nice too but not tried setting it up tubeless yet.

Did you not have any issues with the sidewalls leaking Ray?

No, it loses no more air than the tubeless ready fitted to the rear which is about 3 psi a week, quick check with the track pump each week keeps them sorted.

Well, I was all set to suggest the Saguaro non TNT.

No issues fitting to an Arch tubeless for me. Seems robust enough for me at 15+stone, not had it long, but have been throwing it around more than would be normal when bikepacking.

The boggo wire bead race kings on my fargo went up tubeless with no hassles on the stock rims, obviously neither tubeless specific. My brother in law had oem trail kings on his El Mar that leaked like a sieve! So not all contis are the same. When they need replacing I'll either go for posher versions in 2.2 or try X Kings. Fwiw I had 2.0 race kings on the fargo and 2.2 xkings on my spearfish (as yet unused, I put spare tyres on it from new) which look the same size. 2.2 race kings look far bigger than 2.2 xkings.

I've only ever tried folders, so maybe wire bead's the way forward?

Cheers for the input, I would like to keep the setup tubeless, but I did fancy the X-kings tread pattern.

I can't see that the x-kings do a ust version either. Will a good lashing of sealant sort it or are the side walls too permeable?

Seems like the wire bead version might be okay ... you could always give the inside a coat of watered down pva just to be sure.

I'm kinda sounding like a fanboy cos I always recommend it but I think the On-one Smorgasbord is utterly fantastic for the money

OK, think I've decided on the Conti X kings....

Then I thought I'd decided on the wire beaded version as the general feeling is that it will seal up alright...

Then I found that there is a UST version....

The UST version is £40, the wire beaded £15 and the folder £20.

I'm tempted to go for the middle ground here and go heavy with the sealant and glue options, But will there be that much difference with the UST version??

£35 at JE James. They are Black Chilli with protection carcass.
