Not strictly an anyone playing out thread but I just wanted to pick the collective brain with regards to Anglesey and the coastal cycle route to rhyl.

After much deliberation I am going to take my two to north wales next week. I have been silly busy with work so haven't had too much time to plan.

So far my vague idea is to drive to rhyl, leave the car somewhere out of the way, jump on a train to bangor ride over to and around anglesey and then back to rhyl along the coastal path.

Not very extreme but im hoping it gives us the occasional bit of sunshine in a seaside setting and therefore keep the boys entertained as we go along.

Any tips on routes or places to wild camp would be gratefully received :)

Rhyl might not be the best place to start/finish..... maybe another 15 minutes on the A55 and leave the car somewhere round Colwyn Bay/Llandudno (or at mine if you fancy a bit more security - let me know I'll PM you address details). Nice run down the cycle path from here to Conwy and on to Bangor (bit of single track lane work needed to get to Bangor). Cross Telford's Menai suspension bridge then lots of quiet single track lanes around the island. Moelfre has a nice chippy and beach - you might be able to wild camp near Traeth yr Ora (we did when sea kayaking around the island a few year back but land based access might be a bit different). Likewise there is an old abandoned brick works on the north coast at Porth Wen with massive old brick kilns (like really big igloos) where we used to access from the sea - makes a great site but only footpath access to get to it (500m from a single track road). Mines at Parrys Mountain (once worlds largest copper mine - might be worth a visit if the boys are into moonscapes and industrial heritage). Couple of nice sites to camp on the NW coast north of Holyhead near Church Bay. Have sneaked in to camp near the southern tip of Holy Island too - Silver Bay - nice spot. Nice creperie in Rhosneigr for a stop on the way round - was in there on Wednesday. Not sure of distance the boys can manage in a day but we have camped in Newborough forest several times and it's a great place - loads of quiet spots in the forest I could point out for you. Handy burger van in the car park and loos/outdoor shower if you need to rinse off the bike/kit. Back on Route 5/Llon Las Cefni for a good distance of cycle path/very minor roads.
You could always head back from Holyhead (or any other station on Anglesey) if they get tired and your are on the west side of the island where the train line runs....

We went there a couple of weeks ago, we rode from here to Chester, jumped on the train to Hollyhead, then looped around the West coast down to Maltraeath for fish and chips before heading into Newborough forest to Bivi..
A steady ride around to Menai Bridge for breakfast at Waitrose, then the train back to Chester, then ride home!
