I'm just starting to collect a few bits for a new frame and on my list are brakes. I've done the usual searching and (due to price) am drawn to Deore, which I can get them for around £35 per end. I can also get 'XT Trekking' discs for £20 per wheel more.

Anyone put any miles on the Deore's? Are the XT's any / much different?

Never used XT - SLX is my price-point. But I have Deore rather than SLX on two of my three MBT. Nowt wrong with them. I think the difference between them and SLX is the latter have tool-free adjustment. Deore take ICE pads although they don't come with them

Cheapest was Ribble £67 but actually £63 with a 10% code off Shimano, which they do offer frequently

I've got old Xt's on my full sus bike and new deore on rigid 29er. The new deores are excellent. Enough power and seemed pretty easy to set up. I'd buy them again.

I had always used XT, but I have Deore on the Puffin.

The pad retaining pin is a split pin on the Deore instead of a screw-fitting and they don't have the adjusters on the levers.

But they work great... I'd struggle to justify going beyond Deore in the future.

Having recently rounded the head on a screw-in Shimano pad retaining pin when using a shonky multi-tool hex key when out on a trail, I'd say a split pin was an upgrade. I have the new SLX brakes on one bike, which are astoundingly good and nearly identical to Deore.

I have Deore on the Fortitude and have covered over 3000 miles with them. They are great brakes. I have found that Superstar organic brake pads perform better than the OEM sintered originals from Shimano. Particularly in terms of heat dissipation. When the Shimano pads get hot, they expand to the point that they rub on the rotor/disc, whereas the Superstar ones do not...

Braking performance is the same for both pads...

I have Deores on my Lurcher and have put a fair amount of miles on them. If you are happy with Shimano brakes then I wouldn't bother going past them in the range. Plenty of power and do the job nicely.

I've recently put some on my 29er and am very happy with the performance for the price...

I nearly bought some but in Ribble's last offer there was only a tenner or so between Deore & SLX so it seemed rude not to get the SLX.

I've just picked up a pair of S/H XT for not much ... depending on their condition either they'll go on or I'll buy some Deore and the XT can go on something else ... thanks for the input.

Some Deore like things came on my Giant Trance, I think they are one below actual Deore in the Shimano brake hierarchy

They have been great, nice feel, plenty of stopping power, simple reach adjustment.

I have a set of XT on my 456, and had thought about swapping them over, but I don't think I'll bother.

That is a good price. I still prefer (good) hydros to my BB7s though.

I've got BB7s on my Fargo, they are ok, but they are not as good as any of the hydro brakes I've had, kevlar pads help, but really they are still less powerful and therefore more tiring to use on really long rides, would really like to replace them but can't afford dropbar hydro's at the moment.

In fairness they weren't Deore. They were Shimano but something unnamed ... they did a similar thing on the Long Mynd last year when I came very close to using Mr Barrington as a brake
