Coasts & Castles north (Sustrans) Edinburgh to Aberdeen

Post by Dan_K »

Posted this on STW too but hoping for a better response here....

Anyone done this route? Am thinking of doing it in June and using my cross bike. It's around 175 miles so was looking at 3 days and camping en route.
Nice route? What's the road surface like?
Camping spots be ok?

The section from St Andrews to Arbroath is mostly all good quality cycle path but there are a couple of sections between St Andrews and Dundee that goes onto the road and a short section on the same stretch that is a dirt track going past Tentsmuir - nothing too rough, I have done it on my carbon road bike just fine.
The road sections can be quite busy with cars.
Oh, and there is a nice ice cream shop in St Andrews if you land there on a nice sunny day : )

When leaving Dundee the cycle path takes you out through the docks. Some people get stopped as you are meant to have an ID to get through. Most of the locals just hang anything round their neck and cycle past looking like they are meant to be there.
If you do get stopped it is pretty easy to bypass the dock taking the road out to Arbroath and then re-join the cycle path before it goes into to Broughty Ferry.

There are also loads of nice pubs in 'The Ferry' too.

Thanks for the info. Looks like it should be fairly straightforward.

Not sure yet Tony. Depends on timings with home and work and when the cheapest train is.
