9 spd ... is it dead yet?

I'm just sorting out bits for a new build and can't decide on gearing / drivetrain but regardless of anything else, I'd like to fit thumbies, I can get 9 spd ones easily and cheaply, I can get 10 spd ones easily but they'll cost 3 times as much ... should I bite the bullet or stick with 9 spd?

I have an 3x8 speed Felt and a 1x10 Speed Genesis... The 8 speed bits are a fraction of the cost of the 10 speed... Plus they seem to last longer (that is a subjective judgement, probably based on imagination).

I would be tempted to go for the cheaper option, especially if the bike is part of a fleet of bikes... Plus, it is nice to have a variety of different setups...

I'm still using 9spd stuff on my Genesis, thumbies are the SA ones from Velovitality. Given that all MTB mechs pull the same and have the same parallax it's only really the shifter and cassette that needs to be 8-9-10spd whatever. I like the idea of 10spd, but what with thick-thin rings and clutch mechs etc....is it that much progress for the likes of what we do?
I don't plan on changing up anytime soon, and if I was really concerned I would just stock pile 9 spd cassettes when they appeared on the clearance shelves of the likes of OnOne etc

I'm purposely going out of my way to get 9 speed stuff, even on new builds for many reasons.

you don't appear to be able to get 10 speed mtb rear mechs that aren't shadow (in shimano flavour), and shadow mech pivots are made of actual cheese for starters :|

I've just built up my new-to-me Swift with 9 speed. I'll stick with it while I've still got bits that need wearing out.

They're only gears and it seems to me the advantages of one system over the other are pretty marginal for just riding about. Anyway, I do most of my riding on just one gear ...

9 and 10 are as dead as each other (http://m.bikeradar.com/mtb/news/article ... 0683/#next) so go with whichevers cheapest and easiest for you

If the only thing out there is xtr then cycling as a hobby is probably dead to me! I'm not panicking just yet!

I've got 9spd

My new Road bike is 10spd

I'm just as vaguely exciting on both, I don't think the gears are the limiting factor :-bd

(Stick with 9  )

Although, there is more variation in chain and sprocket widths / dimensions than gears with singlespeed. :geek:

Another reason I am sticking with 9 speed is that ALL my bikes (apart from the singlespeed...although that's in parts now) are 9 speed, so mix and match components if required  Less of an issue now I'm no longer a student and some income coming in so I don't have to stop eating to buy bike spares

Why shimano have made the road 10 speed and MTB 10 speed completely different is beyond me. That's a right PITA.

9 speed ftw :-bd

You're right, I must give it a proper outing. Been a bit distracted with a new project, not that it's much of an excuse.

Four. I quite often collapse into a heap at the top of a long climb. Sit down, Stand up, Walk, Lie down
