Windstopper jacket recommendations

Post by composite »

The zip broke last night on my jacket that converts to a gilet. Any one got any recommendations for either a standard windstopper type jacket or better, a windstopper that can convert to a gilet?

When you say windstopper do you mean one of the thicker Gore type ones (almost softshell) or a very light windproof top?

I've been using an OMM Sonic smock for the last 12 months - weighs nowt (sub 80g), keeps the windchill off and even a light shower. Can often be had for £35 - £40 if you shop around. The RAB Cirrus is worth a look too ... either smock or jacket with hood.

Well in honestly I'm not 100% sure. The jacket/gilet that broke last night was of the very light but amazingly wind proof variety. I also have another soft shell type jacket that won't last much longer (zip sometimes splits, but sometimes works) which is a bit heavier and also wind proof.

I guess replacing both with one thing would be great, but er.... I'm not exactly sure which style exactly I want. :???:

I'll take a look at those you have mentioned, cheers.

Just bear in mind that what I've listed don't have any actual insulation properties but they are nearly 100% windproof, which obviously reduces convective heat loss :geek:

If it's just the zip on your current jacket thats not connecting the two sides well enough, it could quite well be saved.
Have a tinker with the zip so that it pushes the edges together better.

Had a couple of tops where the zip wouldn't connect the sides together, or after being zipped up, it would just burst open (possibly too many pies ) Got told by a seamstress to have a tinker with the zips & both have been fine since..

Might be worth a try before splashing any cash..

There's also zip repair kits on fleabay for a couple of quid if the zips come right off..

Worth keeping an eye on my local bike shops site as being local to Scott they buy in all the end of year clothing and do some crazy deals ...

Startcycles.co.uk

You have to live with the Scott branding though it can be subtle on some items but fabrics are proper .. all goretex and windstopper

I've got a Scott/ Gore Windstopper gillet I bought of one of their team riders at the end of a racing season. Cost me a tenner, and I've had it for years now. Great piece of kit.

Tempted by the OMM smock. Anyone know where I can get one for under £40?

Well it seems that Sports Pursuit are going to take it back as faulty. They say they will try to source a replacement but seems doubtful with their business model.

Looked at those cheap Scott Gilets. Some of them are god awful but there are a couple of very well priced good ones. Might just get a refund and go for one of those.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Sports Pursuit will be giving me a refund for sure now so I went with replacing both jackets.

Couldn't decide between 2 soft shells on wiggle so ordered both and will send one back. :-bd

Thanks for the link to the cheap Scott stuff. I went with one of the nice looking black wind stopper gilets. Some of that Scott stuff looks terrible though doesn't it?
