One of the more obvious problems with meths stoves is the limited heat control ... they're pretty much on or off. I know Tangias have a simmer ring affair but I don't use a Tangia. I wanted to see if I could fab' something up that would help offer a little control and here's the first attempt.
The outer ring only has half the jet holes the stove has, so with the ring in place place you can close half the jets and reduce the burn. It's also possible to close off the bottom half of the jets that are burning by lifting the ring up to cover a portion of them. It's spring loaded to help seal the covered jets and stop any flames 'leaking' past. Anyone got any other ideas or tried anything to help add a little control to their meths stove?
Like the idea and always fun to make stuff but is the surely the issue not about output, I want something to boil water as fast and efficiently as possible can't think of a need to simmer??
Even when using Gas / Petrol don't we all just whack it on full?
My issue with Meths is knowing how much to use to get a boil so I don't put too much / too little in and maybe a way to over fill and safely stop and reclaim unused meths otherwise your limited to pre-practised water to meths amounts.
I agree with Matt - I just want to get the water up to the boil and into the cosy as fast as possible. The only mod I think might be worth the weight would be a purpose designed 'snuffer' - that way you can shut off the stove, allow to cool and re-bottle the last bit of unburnt meths. I think the base of a drinks can should fit the bill for most stoves - a few grams?
I hear what you're selling fellas and if it's a brew or dehydrated meal then I'm right there with you but when you've got flatfishys christmas dinner to compete with, then a little more control might be called for
