Following on from the bargain alert thread and the mention of solid fuel stoves plus the Esbit test on the main site ... show me your solid fuel stoves that can boil water. The one below has given me the best results and weighs under 5g.

You know which one I have Stuart, so is there a 'best' fuel to use though that's the question as I guess the stove platform is mostly irrelevant ;)

I'm not convinced there is. I was told that genuine Esbit tablets were the way forward but I've not seen any real world evidence to prove that they're any better than cheaper (Gelert) ones. It would seem however, that older tablets don't produce quite as much heat as fresher ones ... that might just be in my head though.

I've got the slightly bigger brother to the Esbit that was reviewed.

I got this one because it includes a trangia style (but better) spirit burner

As others have found the solid fuel option is a bit lame.

Friends have used the Gelert pocket stove with good success by burning a few tabs at the same time. At £3-£4 including 24 tabs it can't be bad.

I also have a High gear Ti Blaze and c100 canister and they fit perfectly inside.

It's not the lightest or smallest option but it's good value for money, I like it and it gives me a choice of 3 fuels.

It's not good for cooking using the hexy tabs but it's perfect for heating your shaving water!

Nevis ... you've got the Esbit stove that I said might be a safer bet, least it gives you options.

The fuel tab in that bottom picture looks massive ... may need to find some of them bad boys ;)
