Excellent, sounded like a great trip. Albeit with very British weather :)

Enjoyed Part 1, will get to rest later. Have you heard of Connex links? No need for a chain tool. I have one of these and a spare. Brilliant wee gadget. My partner has one on his chain too and he has an alfine 11. http://www.connexchain.com/Connectors/C ... 1_309.html

It's still a good idea to carry a chain tool too. In my experience if you snap a chain you sometimes need to remove part of the snapped link with the chain tool before you rejoin with a 'quick link' like the connex one you mention.

We would have used a quick link to fix John's chain at xmas but he was using an 8 speed chain and I only had 9 speed links.

He should carry his own. That's what Mr Farawayvisions tells me. I don't do enough crazy stuff to break my chain.

No need for crazy stuff ... seen more chains snap with tootling along in granny ring, than I've seen on leg busting single speed climbs. ;)

Are you suggesting that I'm always in the granny ring :o
Just because I am a granny, doesn't mean I can't bust up those climbs.

Some people are so touchy ;) ... I was simply suggesting that you don't need to be doing anything remotely extreme, rad or gnarly* to snap a chain. Usually the use of the granny ring would indicate that no extreme, rad or gnarly behaviour is taking place.

*However I'm informed that been 'fair chuffed' will often lead to premature drivetrain wear.
