When I picked up my new bike last week they said legally they only had to supply a bell with a new bike and not fit one

I know a few people who have a bellend on their bikes. No one with just a bell though....

My 1999 Sunn Urge XC Un came with a squeaky blue man that was their mascot at the time. Looked like Berk from Trap Door.

I have got a Horn-It, but I think I'd be a bit of a git to use it off-road.

I have to admit, I've been hankering after a bell for my commuter bike ever since I stumbled upon Spurcycles beautiful handmade bells. It's on my Want list.

Two do and three don't. Rarely use them though, it all sounds a bit Mr Toad 'get out of my way'. Would rather slow down and speak to folks.

If the purpose of a bell is to alert other users of your bike and presence, then I have a device that weighs nothing and it is also capable of other uses

Its my mouth - I just shout (or make beep beep noises :D)

Actually one of my bikes without a bell has a Chris King rear hub, much more classy. And it works.

Both mine do, I find I'm normally to knackerd to talk let alone call out to walkers. I think bells are better for horses as you can give them warning from further away.

Big horn when on the Muni I guess it matches my big clown shoes and red nose. Politely cough when on bikes, used to use bell but whatever you do walkers suffer acute tachycardia around here when you ride up behind them however slowly and respectfully.

Living in Edinburgh I see plenty of people getting annoyed at having yet another cyclist ringing his bell at them and expecting them to get out the way. Slow down and from a distance where you don't have to shout make your presence known in as friendly a manner as possible is what I do. Certain paths I just avoid (the canal especially) because there are just so many walkers using them. Mind you, one guy I hailed three times and he still didn't hear me so I passed as wide and slowly as possible, "get a bell you idiot" was his reaction.
Now have hope hubs which helps.

I run on the canal quite a bit lunchtimes and I must admit a bike approaching from behind with a bell it's much nicer. I should get one really but in the Borders I have only had 1 walker ever comment "You should ask for a bell for xmas" then he laughed.

Might put one on the crosser if I can find a small one
