do I need them and what are they for? ?
Right so iv gone and got a surly cc it comes with two screws n springs. I know where they go but im building it with gears so do I really need them n what do they actually do? ?

Help with wheel placement/chain tension when SSing don't they?
Unless they bugger with the gears I'd put them in as A) The threads in the frame might fill with cack & B) I'd lose them for she I did eventually need them. C) if you do smash up your gears mid-ride you might want an SS get you home option.

Just had a look at the frame, bolts go the other way than I thought, so (not for the first time) I'm talking bobbins. Wheelbase adjustment, isn't it?

What do u mean by the other way. Do they bolt in from the inside or the outside im not sure

Yep ... wheelbase adjustment. Set them so your wheel's central in the frame, then just leave them in place. It'll save much messing about when you get a puncture, etc 

They screw in from the rear of the drop-out.What do u mean by the other way. Do they bolt in from the inside or the outside im not sure

The ones on my Kite bolt from the inside of the drop out, so the axle goes against the head of the screw.
