Anyone got any experiences of a handlebar mount system for a smartphone... Something like this:

I had one for my iPhone, but a hard case. Gave up in the end as if you had the screen bright enough to see for nav/bike computer duties the battery lasts 5 minutes. Also made it awkward taking photos. Switched over to a Garmin edge/Dakota and haven't looked back!

thanks for the reply johnny. i do have an older garmin gps, but it doesn't have maps and i normally just use it for hiking. i have viewranger on my htc phone so i'd probably prefer to just use this now and again to check my location. i know what you mean about power usage with the brightness up full, but i have some spare batteries plus an external recharger thingie that usually gives me all the juice i need for a long weekend.

I've got one of these - it mounts to either the stem or bars:

I've used it off road and in really heavy rain and its been fine. Haven't had any issues with battery life with my iphone either - lasted 2 days before needing a charge.

I have a lifeproof case and bike mount as I use menorymap on iPhone for some navigation.
It's a fairly expensive option but I find it works very well for me.

Thanks Ian. Rudedog, that's the very one I am considering. I take it you're happy with it attaching to the bar/stem and its secure over rough terrain?

Yep, no problems at all with rough terrain. I did the west highland way with it last weekend which has some really rough descents.
