I test rode the Surly Krampus 29er+ back in May at Fat Fourth and fell in love with how it handled but without and braze on mounts and a rumour from the guys at Surly who were over at Fat Fourth that a bike packing specific version would be out in 2014.

I give you the Surly ECR (Enduro Camping bicycle)
The 29er+ 2 x 10 Jones barred semi fat future bivi bike.

"The other new fat tired monster is the 29+ ECR. Call it the Enduro Camping bicycle, or any other suitable acronym, but the ECR basically takes the 29×3.0 Knard tires on Rabbit Hole Rims and builds them into a frame with bike packing pedigree. The geometry is different from the Krampus as this is built for long days in the saddle, but still with hugely capable tires."
"ECR has nearly every braze on and mount you can imagine, including the Troll’s horizontal dropouts which have a direct mount for Surly’s flat bed cargo trailer"

And
"Apart from the Krampus it looks like the Surly E.C.R. has slightly more long-ride friendly geometry, all the brazons you would ever need and the swiss-army knife of dropouts that is used on the Troll."

I've already contacted 2 of the main Surly importers ref this bike for next year.
Now I just need a good bonus from the boss this Autumn

Do you reckon you really need 50mm rims for those 2.7 tyres? I often run a 2.4 on my 30mm rims on my FS with no problems what so ever.

Is the seatpost angle very slack (ie, a long way back from vertical) or is it just how the pics make it appear?

Buy the frame, fork and wheel set, fit a lighter weight saddle, carbon seat post, go bling 1 x 10 upgrade = under 30 lbs I'd guess. camping bike that's as much fun as a Krampus with dangly bits

The ECR is the only place for the new wider jones loops. Seriously want one. My last 3 bikes have all been Surlys, not light, but neither am I.

The ECR looks gorgeous and who cares if it's a little overweight, fun is more important! I guess in an ideal world I could afford a Singular Swift, Jones Bike and a quality Fat bike but the ECR looks like a compromise worth buying in installments for next year.
The first installment; 710 Jones bars are up for pre order ....
Charlie bike mongerer will have them early September. http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/jef ... 2415-p.asp I really, really want some. 710 wide open loop bar bike porn action here
