'Tis very sad.
I have to say that I don't really understand why the MBA made the locations of bothies available to non members*. Perhaps I'm wrong but the instances of vandalism, parties, litter and general nobbish behaviour seems to have increased since they did.
*I'm sure there must be a reason.

Amazing (in a bad way) how someone can share some interests (travelling in the great outdoors) but not the "respect" aspect of bothies.
I wonder if the locations are made known because the WWW makes it an inevitability and a bit more publicity might draw in more paying members?

With the Internet it was easy to find bothy locations with a few clicks.
I think they were pissing in the wind trying to keep them exclusive.

I found a brilliant bivi spot in the Clwyds very well hidden and secluded however it was within walking distance of a village. After several great bivi rides I passed it on a day ride and decided to stop for lunch, to my dismay I found quite a few empty larger cans and a load of rubbish left there. I doubt very much it was left by cyclists or walkers so I could only presume it was people from the local village.
Don't fancy sleeping there now, especially if I'm on my own.

Surely the existence of bothies is just local knowledge though? Perhaps I'm naive, but I'd be surprised if people went to the trouble of going to the MBA website specifically to find places to trash. I'd have thought it was more likely that local scrotes just knew about a place and went there to get pissed.

Official or not, information is very easy to come by with the t'interweb. Which can have both hugely positive and quite negative impacts on everyone. But then that's a whole different discussion that could get quite in depth.

I know quite a few record collectors online who love to boast of their "secret" shops that nobody else knows about, where they can find their rare gems.
Needless to say, those people are the same ones who do the most hand-wringing when said shops go out of business.
