Bio ethanol?

Post by restlessshawn »

Can this be used in meths stoves* as it sounds kinda like the same thing but made from veg and not purple? Or am I missing something?

It is much cheaper, only £5 for 2l @ B&Q vs £3.98 for 500ml meths

The short answer to your question is 'yes' you can use ethanol ... I think the 'Bio' bit might be marketing BS though. ;)

The longer answer is:
Meths as we know it is ethanol with a certain amount of methanol added to it. Pure ethanol contains more energy than meths ... the methanol slows the burn of the ethanol down slightly. You might find that the flames from the stove start to turn very slightly yellow at the tips when using 'pure' ethanol. If this happens, add 5% water to your fuel and try again. If the tips are still yellow try another 5% water (now 10% water/ 90% ethanol) but I wouldn't go above 10%.
May the bridges you burn light your way
