It's official!

It's official, I just heard on the radio that this December has officially been the most miserable on record, with only 27 hours of sunshine in total.

That feels about right.

Contrarily, I've rather enjoyed it - quite happy not to have a nasty hot thing shining down and burning my bald bonce  . Much overrated in Reginald's view  .

Felt pretty glum meteorologically speaking. There was a three day stint where we couldn't even see to the end of the garden

Is this a London thing? We had more hours of sunshine than that just this week.

Somewhat mixed month here - generally quite mild but also very wet and windy. There was a spell of 5 days or so when it went very cold but I have to say, I don't recall seeing much sun or even daylight. Genuinely feels like I'm living in perpetual darkness.

Yup, it's been a pretty depressing month, the weather has been poor show. I've been ill with sinusitis since the end of November, then caught COVID, then had antibiotics for the sinusitis which I finished on Monday, but today it feels like I've been punched in the forehead again. Haven't ridden my bike all month and am now going to loose my BaM streak as I'm not feeling up to going out tonight. Just hope I feel up to celebrating Hogmanay....

I don't mind the gloom but often think back to those halcyon days when I could cycle to work smiling inwardly at all those performing the morning defrost ritual. That said I also remember the change shack on our drilling rigg* regularly freezing up and so having no working showers. Not quite so dandy after a wet trip and you're covered in drilling mud.

It has been too wet under foot for the Chihuahuas though, they get walked in the fields with the Patterdale and the amount of mud about means a bollocking from Mrs Mac every time we get home.

*Mispelt to stop R.I.G. being changed to bicycle every bloomin' time

Well I've done 600 plus miles this month. True the ones I did over Xmas involved 50m vis and pishing rain but I've finished the year on a high today with my 12th ride of over 100miles. It was a bit murky overhead but dry(ish). The weather in December is generally always horrible so we can't complain really. January on Saturday :-bd

I didn't realise your garden was that long. Well it is a larger part of the estate.

Due to the lower arc of the sun and the high, pointiness of the mountains we lose the sun entirely for just over a month reach year.

Not one second of sunlight no matter how blue the skies are from mid-December to mid-January.

And even a month either side of that it's down to less than an hour each day (which I usually miss in the workshop).

So yeah, I know the feeling of things being a bit glum.

Obviously this is usually offset by folks buggering off up the mountain on skis/boards etc... but my back hasn't been up to it this year and so I've just grumped around the valley bottom whinging about the cold/dark to anyone who stands still long enough.

Because of this I escaped through the tunnel to Italy yesterday and did a glorious 80km ride with a mate in temperatures approaching pleasant (no gloves, shorts with 3/4 bibs underneath).

Was a VERY much needed morale boost and already has me excited about spring and next year's riding.....

You need a smaller garden - no danger of us not being able to see the end of ours

I need a better weather forecast app.
Both yesterday and today we're forecast to be rain free.
Yesterday was constant drizzle, and today looks to be heading the same way.

Now need to decide if I can be bothered to do a wet 26km ride, in order to meet a nice round figure for the year

If it drizzled it didn't rain.
Let be clear, [wishful meteorphorically thinking] ,

- Drizzle sticks to your windows/coat,
-rain runs down it.
So by that definition it was rain-free
,(but unfortunately, still wet....)

Discuss.....

 Are you a lawyer, or an insurance assessor?

It's all precipitation (But even snow is, I suppose) and it was definitely running down my coat (but not into it - thank you, Columbia Outdry!)

I live in Sussex, where there are over 30 words for mud See 'Words for mud' section - they will all get you muddy

Agreed!
Been miserable commuting to work.
Morning not so bad, light after 2/3 hrs riding.
Evenings between 6-9pm it's dark, damp and miserable. Always seems a northerly wind ,some days it takes 4hrs ,don't get home til 10pm if it's blustery.
However, chins up everyone! It's getting lighter everyday now! :-bd

Happy new year!

No , just trying to derail the thread in a new direction. So not a substandard stirrer or stick in the mud..
I'll leave that to Reginald

Have been trying to build something in the garden (which involved significant digging)... December REALLY wasn't the month for it.

Bring on the ice cold dry weather please.

Given the depth I've had to go to, it might as well be.
