Placating the other half.

Seeing Jameso's add for a spot tracker made me wonder how many other people have problems concinving the loved one that what we do is safe and highly unlikely to end in disaster. My wife watches any and every A&E, medical emergency, emergency bikers, air rescue etc etc that she can (does my head in). One the other day had a road cyclist seriously injured in a crash (no one else involved) and went on and on about it. I tried to explain that the 6 hours a week I do delivering pizza on a scooter in Edinburgh is far more dangerous than any solo mountain biking I do but she just does not get it  .

I think that sometimes it can be difficult for people that have never 'tried it' to understand that what we do (and the great outdoors in general) isn't overly dangerous in the big scheme of things.

Accidents have a habit of happening when you least expect them and usually when you're doing something simple. If a SPOT helps keep the peace, then it can only be a good thing ... and yes, riding a scooter through the city is possibly one of the most dangerous activities I can think of ;)

*Just out of interest I just asked Dee if she worries about me when I'm out on my own, it went like this:

Me: Do you worry about me when I'm out on my own ?

Dee: Honestly ?

Me: Yes

Dee: Do I f**k

Could be worse Ray.. I went climbing in the Ecrin a few years ago. A simple, straight-forward route took us out of phone reception for a couple of days, as would most in that area. By the time we'd walked back to La Grave my mate's wife had called MR, French local police, the bureau de guides and reported us 'presumed missing' at work as he'd not checked in for 24hrs.. It seems unfair to cause that much panic, but at the same time, relax!! Riding to work on road is far more risky.

Edit to add / clarify the wanted ad, my GF doesn't worry enough to look at spot updates ) I wanted to try one out as a compromise or good idea for solo rides, may need one for a particular ride anyway.
