More Monkii business

Just fitted them, looks like they are gonna do the job nicely but not tried on a ride yet. I went for the V cage that requires a twist to get off for extra security

I did modify the cleats slightly and time will tell if this matters. I just dremeled a small grove into the back so they fit the profile of the fork better when mounting and left out the washers. If they snap I'll just get some more cleats and fit them properly :oops:

Might put sleeping mat in the left one, or tools, tube, pump, not decided yet

The look really good these cages. I cant think of anywhere to fasten them though !

If you use the Monkii clips they could go on: Fork legs, under the down tube, across the top tube, seatpost or even stem/bars.

BTW I don't think those alterations will cause any issue Restless. Very tidy job.

I'm still undecided on forks, either sticking with suspension, at which I'm not too comforatable strapping on extra weight to the magnesium lowers. Even though I they would 'probably' be fine.
If I got for rigid forks the ones I like arent very round in the leg.

With a bar harness, gps, light up front and a 70mm stem I'd be surprised to see any room there. Seatpack rules out the back, gastank rules out the top tube. I doubt it would work for me at the seatpost end, I have massive legs that get in the way of anything there.

That leaves inside the frame, I'm hoping my new frame will fit the tangle bag I already have, otherwise its going to be a custom job. I guess it might go in one of the bottle cage areas to allow carrying a nalgene bottle or similar, wide and short water container.

Adding cages to suspension forks will increase unsprung weight which I believe will affect their performace and increase wear, you might have to alter the way they are set up too.
Stu, I know motorbike engine tuning was your field but can you throw any light on this, will it have a noticeable affect?

You're right Ray ... the cages will add a certain amount of unsprung weight but maybe not as much as you might think. Even the top half of a fork spring is supported by the bottom half of the spring, so the top part of a fork leg might still be sprung rather than unsprung ... it's a slightly grey area though. The higher up the cages are mounted then the less likely they are to increase unsprung weight.

People usually change suspension settings to account for changes in sprung weight (heavier rider, etc) but an increase in unsprung weight will effect suspension. It's easy to forget that suspension works two ways, ie supporting weight from above and responding to the terrain below, so as unsprung weight increases the spring and damping rates need to increase to cope with the greater forces. ;)
