Bad Science by Ben Goldacre. Illuminating reading about how badly Science and Medicine are reported in the media and how quacks get away with murder. Interesting and infuriating, in a good way! To tie it in with the forum Ben is a keen cyclist. ;)

Want to know why 'Europe' is the way it is today (and where it's going)? Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt. 700+ pages, but a riveting & illuminating read. (No indication of whether Mr Judt was a cyclist though..)

For a laugh I had a google to see if I could find any Tony Judts on a bike. Turns out the poor fella got Lou Gehrig's disease and a pupil of his did a sponsored bike ride for him. Unfortunate connection. Did also get me reading some of his quotes. Might have to have a look myself, cheers!

Have you read French Revolutions by Tim Moore? I thought it was really funny and definitely worth a look.

I'm currently reading Alastair Humprhies: Moods of Future Joys. pt1. It's not bad and quite an easy read.

If the subject matter is totally open?

Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts
Excellent true story about an aussie prison escapee living in, and getting into trouble in bombay

Marching Powder - Rusty Young
Another true story about a small time drug runner in la paz prison.

Born to run - Christopher McDougal
About a bloke finding the barefoot runners of south america, very intersting read.

Life of Pi - Yann Martel
Book is better than the film, as they say.

Moods of Future Joys / Thunder and Sunshine - Al Humphries
I like these books about a pretty long round the world bike trip

If I was to pick on eof those, it would be shantaram

Given this is after all a cycling forum, I thought I'd better offer a more appropriate justification for my suggestion, so I looked over the index and bound 'bicycles' on 341 and 'The Bicycle Thieves' on 88 & 233... there's always a bike in the background somewhere :-)

Couldn't stick Shantaram and suspected there was an awful lot of "poetic licence" to it. Each to their own 8-)

Struggling to put an adjective to this book but it's worth reading, IMO:

I'm reading this just now, good read so far. Probably helps if you run a bit

Yeah I enjoyed them, kind of like a cycling version of Ted Simon 'Jupiter's Travels'

Not seen the film, but the book was brilliant. Couldn't put it down.

The Crane Cousins Journey to the Centre of the World is an interesting book

I had the forgotten highlander on audio book.
Fantastic.
I had a tear in my eye for most of the second half of it.
