I understand the sport/competition argument. Not my point though which was just bikepacking (to me) isn't a "sport", just like a walk in the hills isn't or a paddle somewhere.

I always thought the leaders dots were notoriously unreliable and seem to pack up with remarkable regularity...

There's a whole debate to be had about the bike industry conflation of bikepacking and ITTs. In my mind, probably due to the way I amble, bikepacking and ITTs are two separate activities that happen to use similar equipment and routes in the same vein as running a marathon and going on a 26.2 mile hike.

Agreed. People will find a way to turn anything into a p1ssing contest. I'm more of an SKT rider myself. The idea of spending two months on the Great Divide sounds far more enjoyable than two weeks.

I just see them as two sides of the same coin.
