Actually, it appears to be a Northern Soul morning at the Towers thanks to Dee. She's wrapping Christmas presents while dancing while trying not to pull her back out ... I figure I'm safer hiding under the van.

Not our front room BTW.

Once knackered from our Northern Soul all-dayer, I've been relaxing with some Bob Vylan. Now, I know there's a few that'll appreciate him and probably more who won't ... which is what makes it good.

I mentioned 'Broken Peach' the other week and their cover of Tainted Love - well this one's quite mental.

That change in frame rate in the filming really makes it very, very odd to watch!

Asked for this for Xmas, it went out of stock, so asked for something else, then I found stock, so I bought it for myself. Just managed to listen to the first slab. We're going to need bigger speakers...

Once again I'm minded to comment "where were they when I was twenty?" (answer = not born. *sigh*). But it makes me appreciate that not all contemporary music is pish and not all music I listened too when I was twenty was better

Having a listen to Esben and the Witch's new album 'Nowhere' on bandcamp. Like it. Also a cracking video of them performing 'No Dog' in a small room. Superb track that.

Dee has just introduced me to the very odd world of Liam Lynch:

I also somehow stumbled across the Viagra Boys the other day - dunno what to tell you, although it does actually make me smile and I'll admit to having found myself shouting 'sports' quite randomly today in a kind of inoffensive tourettes manner.

Bit of a youthful revival at BDS mansions, the recent addition of a record deck to the west wing and subsequent wallet emptying experience of buying vinyl again means I’ve gone retro, Clash- London calling, Jam- setting sons and now some Stranglers…..

Yes! Welcome back to the club!
And no, not a cheap thing to collect.
.....unless you've got very niche (in a none underground cool way) obscure taste. In which case there might be lots of stuff going cheap on:
https://www.vinylnet.co.uk/.
I managed to rebuild almost my entire previous collection of early nineties UK indie records for next to nothing.
(The Frank and Walters, CUD, Senseless Things, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Kingmaker etc... unloved classics!)
Happy hunting.....

I found this massively underwhelming. Not terrible, not without merit but even after a few more listens to give it the chance the names involved deserve I couldn't quite bring myself to care much about it. Felt more like a geeky bedroom project that got too big and so they included the long versions of literally everything recorded and called it an album. Might give it another go and see if a few months has changed my mind.....

But you'll be getting the satisfaction of owning music that you won't get from a download (not that I don't love mp3s for when out and about) or worse...'renting' music via spotify. You'll appreciate that decent slab of vinyl with a well put together package, even when it does come at a price. I got a couple of LPs for Xmas including Primal Scream's 'Give Out But Don't Give Up (Memphis Recordings). Now, it sounds lovely, is a ltd run, 3LP edition but it set someone (not me, it was a present) back £50 (Worse is that since Xmas day one outlet reduced it to £30).

vinyl - yep, it's not just the music it's the
thing too. Online stuff is all very well but there's no
experience.
Anyway, here's your next purchase gents

My 16 yr old daughter is a vinyl convert and is keen on getting some Abba. On a weekend in Brighton, we spent time escaping the rest of the Family's shopping by heading to record shops. She was after getting some Abba LPs. They were asking for about £15 for a 2nd hand greatest hits LP that was no better than a wobble board. Crazy prices out there for something you could have got for a few quid not too long ago. Listen to me, what an old fart.

"record shops". Ahh, great days. I spent two decades amassing a ridiculous pile of mainly early 60's vinyl. When I worked in London in the early 80's me and a mate would take loooong lunch breaks travelling all over the city rootling through the secondhand places - Record & Tape Exchange, Camden Records etc.
Of course there were no tinternet listings etc. Maybe an ad in a newspaper, maybe a tipoff. Maybe a phone call and a desperate dash and hope it was still there. I remember one hare-brained day out to Warwick to try and pick up just one single ('Kings Go Fifth' by Tony Meehan as it happens). The relief and joy as I handed over my 75p or whatever it was was indescribable.
To be honest, maybe the actual music was entirely irrelevant and the whole point was simply
the primeval thrill of the chase....
