That was superb watching Liam’s dot. An amazing ride, just under 3.5 days on a steel rigid singlespeed, in at times pretty poor conditions. I look forward to next year’s attempt in perfect weather

Figure of speech... Josh always beats James... on the TCR it seems he got bored of it. Don't think that's changing soon

Random question that has kept bugging me; not that many of the riders are using dynamos... how do they keep their lights running when they aren't stopping all that often to charge? Most lights I have ever used only last 3hrs or so, then require a lot of energy and a 3-pin to get back up to capacity again...

Some are using dynamo setups, but unless you are quick you'll not charge your battery. Exposure light can last up to 36 hours on low gas. That and a 20,000 mah battery pack would easily see you round.

This is Scotland in (near) mid-summer. There isn't that much darkness each night, on a clear night if you aren't on a road you probably won't need to turn on lights until 11pm and it's more than light enough to ride by at 3am. In 2017 I did the route in 5 days with a single Exposure Joystick and had 50% charge left. I picked one of the programs that gave 24hrs on low setting. Apart from the last night when I rode through I probably only rode an hour each night then a bit of use when setting up the bivy. I also had it on the lowest setting most of the time with just the occasional stint on the medium setting on the last night when tackling a bit of downhill.

Brilliant riding from Andrew Hutcheson too. Very impressive pacing/management.

Interesting regarding lights - thanks. I hadn't realised that the Exposure lights were USB rechargable. Mine have always been a battery pack that you charge from the mains

Exposure lights can have a battery pack (fuel cell?) that mounts on the back of your helmet too. I think a Joystick would then run for 48 hrs. Both the light and/or the fuel cell can be used to charge devices/phone etc. There's a reason (or two) that they are more expensive. As above though, it's not often a light is needed for long, unless you're in it for the win.
On my only HT experience, I had to camp in the rain at 2am in Glencoe because the cheap Chinese head torch I tried to get away with failed - though that was a blessing in disguise....
I have vivid memories of following the rider ahead of me (@touch) over the Devil's Staircase, thinking that if I could just catch up, I could follow him on the descent - as the moonlight was only good enough for climbing slowly. The replay on Trackleaders has him a few of hours ahead of me. Either someone was out at midnight for a nightride, or I was hallucinating after a long day

@touch - Did you go from Dundonnel (mile 350) to the finish, without any sleep that year (2015)?

FWIW it's a stunningly beautiful evening here in the NW. I have, just this minute, come from laying on the beach watching the sunset and the full moon is now rising through a bit of light haze. Any rider with energy to spare will be taking advantage and putting in an extra few miles.

To follow up on Bobs point about light, In could quite easily read a newspaper without any artificial light at theoment and it's past 22:30.

Trepwatch: she's made it to Kylesku, along with Mart and Jonny Baker by the look of it. I suspect they're emptying the place of food and either sharing a few laughs, or staring blankly into space at each other. No news on how snazzy their wheels are.

This sub 3.5 day business is all very impressive, but it's over before it's started  It's them that are still going to be out there for another day or two, or three, or four, that I've got just as much respect for. If you're still riding, good luck!

It was after the river crossing in Fisherfield, just before the steep climb up to the plateau. I was also seeing the imaginary people and lights by the time I got to Devil's staircase!

How far North West are you? Met office says there's almost 100% chance of Aurora being visible from the north coast tonight:

Very good point, in many ways they deserve more respect, there’s no fame or glory. Anyone who rides these multi day events deserves the utmost respect just for setting off.
