I think this probably belongs here - I picked up a wire flux mig from Lidl today for those outdoor, upside down and hard to reach jobs and it's surprisingly good. WF mig sometimes gets a bad press but that's mainly because it's not exactly like a normal mig and you need to adjust a few things.

Anyway, if you fancy the idea of a mig welder but don't want the expense of buying gas, I'd recommend one of these - £80 well spent. While you're in, I'd also pick up some spare wire for it - £6 for 2 spools is very cheap and if you're not sure then buy the .9mm stuff.

I don't even have a Mig to weld but I hear old Soviet military stuff is quite cheap these days.

What weight is each reel?
My mig uses both STD and fluxed versions. It is useful for some Jobs. Just have to swap the polarity on mine and away you go!!
Am sure I pay about £9 for 0.45kg from machine mart.
Also bought an inverter arc welder from Lidl to compliment my STD arc welder. I was impressed with its thin metal welding ability!
And it's light to carry.
Don't think I have used my standard arc welder since!

Oh for Pete's sake! Luckily same price as the replacement I bought. Maybe I should get another as a potential replacement replacement.

Is it better than a normal gas less mig mate , been looking around as mine is starting to give up the ghost , not that it welds that great with brewery gas anyhow but boc don’t like their gas bottles in residential premises

Better's subjective. It's certainly not better than my big mig set but that was a grand Nice thing about flux core is there's no gas to get blown away(kind of), so it's very handy for those outside jobs. Can be prone to a bit more splatter but if you keep the torch a little further from the work than you normally would it's limited. For owt delicate, there's always a bit of anti-splatter. Ampage will drop right down for thin stuff or up to 140ish for 3mm-4mm plate/angle

Took me ages on my Clark one! ( I admit.. I am a pigeon poo king!)

I was very surprised how good it was. Nice uniform bead with plenty of pentration. You've only 2 controls - amps and wire speed so very little to mess up.

Seeing this about welder I have a question. How difficult is it to learn to weld? I sometimes have a need to weld, generally a small job, and feel it might be worthwhile to be able. Otherwise I have to pay someone or find another way.

Mig is generally considered to be the easiest and in truth the hardest bit is getting the settings sorted - once that's done, anyone should be able to 'join bits of metal together' after half an hours practice. Something like the Lidl welder is about as simple as it gets but can still produce good results.

I'm just about managing to write it off on a basis of having no work space.

That all said, how comparable is it to stick welding? I was okay at that in college but utterly abyssmal at brazing (exploding work pieces a-plenty)

I've bought and fitted these so happy to give them the thumbs up.

I've got an old set on my Dew, the rotors are cheap and nasty (read: LOUD) but otherwise they have been faultless and played nicely with some spare Avid/Shimano rotors I had lying about. I'd put them on a par with Clarks M.2's.
