In my experience with the Etrex 20 and Spot Gen 3, Eveready Lithium Ultras are the best for longevity. Also helps to turn both devices off each night before sleep. Etrex with lowest backlight settings before none with map following enabled and route up...should get around 4 or 5 days on a pair of LU's before needing to switch. Spot is 5-7 days. YMMV depending on how you drive each device.

Drop in a fresh pair in Banff and your next change will be mid Montana or lower. Top up the spare set in Butte as there's not a whole lot between there and Pinedale (you can try Lima or Island Park too - IP is off route). Next set in mid Co (Steamboat, Silverthorne or Breck). Next set in NM (Abiquiu, Cuba or Grants).

Or something like that :)

Hopefully only have one set of batteries for GPS and spot as the dynamo will be charging the buffer batteries for general use.

Probably a bad idea but I've sat down and listed everything I'm taking:

Mr Storm, a down gillet and a down jacket? Part of a layering system I'm guessing?

They are both pretty thin ones....much like my sleeping bag! Decided on light bag and the jacket rather than a big bag.

Hi - having a look at this to be done as an 8 week bimble Aug/Sept. How are people getting back to the UK fro Antelope Wells please? Ride / Transfer to El Paso and flight seems to be the best option?

My wife is hopefully picking me up...unless I get there before she lands ....

Look on the ACA site - loads of info there. Also, bikepacking.net.

I'm flying out of Phoenix so about 350 more miles to go. Hopefully not sick of riding by then! Going to worry about the actual logistics once I'm there.

Jeffrey Sharp who has a ranch in Hachita picks people up and ferries them to El Paso, Lordsburg or Silver City to get their connecting flights, if it's a late finish you can kip the night at his place, he's a top bloke and very entertaining, he'll also have beer for your finishing moment.

I've a draft to him sat in my gmail just in case I'm way ahead of time. In a way, it'd be nice to have to use it...doubtful though.

I didn't opt for El Paso as a return flight from there was £1000 and a return flight from Phoenix was £260. I'd rather spend the difference on hiring a convertible Mustang and slinging my bike in the back.

Hi johnnystorm - yes just seen that exact same scenario - Westjet Phoenix > Gatwick is £250-£350 so makes more sense.

If you drive to Phoenix, go from Hachita down Animas, Portal, Bisbee, Tombstone then north to PHX, really beautiful.

Tombstone on July 4th was so 'merica it was insane.

Good call mountainbaker, we're taking a 2 week vacation after - that may be something to do!

Lucky you! I flew out 48 hours after finishing, I still managed to do Tombstone, phoenix and flagstaff all before getting my flight! I was f*@ked though, barely remember any of it!

Also, there's nothing quite as satisfying as driving on washboard in a Chevy Suburban (My cousin rented it) and not noticing the washboard, after 3 weeks of brain rattling washboard on a rigid bike

Well, I say two weeks...I've given a two week error time incase I explode on what time I'd like to do.

Wife flies in on what would be 17 days - we fly out two weeks after that.

So hell, I may only get 2 days ;)

You're not even there yet and you've forgotten how to speak English.

I'll feedback on Westjet in 6 weeks time!

I'm also hoping to finish and take in some Americana at a relaxed pace.

For those of you who make it down south in one piece...stay on the lookout for Faralitos opposite the old Martins hardware store in El Rito. Killer green chilli dishes there. Make sure you have cash...and ask if they have beer...the owner brought out free local brews for us in 2014. Who knew the monks in Abiquiu were a dab hand with hops :)

Booked - Gatwick > Calgery 2nd August. Phoenix > Gatwick 12th October. Should be long enough for my weak old legs :geek:
