Strava in the south east is hilarious - i think every single section of road and so called "trail" has at least 3 segments on them. I've given a couple of segments a go (more a case of at the time going "I bet this is a segment" and then nailing it) - done alright, but no way you can get a segment round here unless you're properly nailing it :|

Anyway, Strava for me is just for sharing rides. When analysing ride data I'm using golden cheetah software, only using heart rate data (setup the zones myself) and then trimp to give info on exponentially weighted stress etc. I used to be into this sort of stuff a lot - but now I just observe what's happening :geek:

Strava certainly seems the most popular. I used to use endomondo which is quite good too.

I'd like to just pick one that I can use all year to track my mileage. Strava is free and seems to work ok so will likely stick with it.

Did a 90km ride today which included the Hicks Lodge 'trail centre'. Just rode round really but was not on my game and kept getting my lines wrong. I was starting to feel hungry which may have something to do with it. Anyway, I set the 531st best time! That is 10 minutes down on the best time but that is by a local sponsored rider. A bit earlier I got a top 10 at Rabid Dog where ever that is, can't quite make it out on the map segment.

I can see how this gets addictive, just hope I am grown up enough to avoid it;-)

Johhnystorm - how do you get retrospective rides off Garmin Connect onto Strava?

Is it a matter of downloading from Connect each individual ride into a space on your computer and then uploading to Strava?

I am not going to transfer all this years rides but thinking that if I am away for a few days or touring how I will retrospectively upload to Strava.

Yes, you download the individual files from connect and then upload them to Strava. Very time consuming which is why I didn't bother.

I never delete any files from my Garmin Edge so every so often I just upload everything to Garmin Connect as well as strava. Just in case strava goes the way of MySpace. ;)

If you've still got your TD plot I'd definitely put that on Strava.

Thanks Dan and Johnny. As you say that will take a while but thanks for confirming what I suspected. I might put on this years TD tour. Sadly I lost my Garmin etrex 81 miles from the start of the 2011 race so have no data.

Argh. I'd still be crying now if that'd happened! :o

I like it just as ride diary and it's nice to see/snoop at what everyone else has been up to.
Handy for downloading GPXs of other routes to either follow or for ideas.
Nice as a 'training tool' as I can see all the improvements/subsequent loss of fitness on individual segments and rides.

I'm playing with Strava at moment, resIsted for ages as don't I like the competitive roadie element that exists on it but this thread made take another look and it's got some useful training tools.

Like a few others I also use Garmin Connect and found this little app in the Strava help sections that copies workouts from it to Strava.

http://www.copymysports.com/

Not tried it yet but looks like you can set to copy your previous workouts as well as any future ones you may upload

Someone just introduced me to the Eddington number,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Edd ... cycling.29

Out of interest on Strava I went into my Activities and then re-sorted them by distance. Then counted down (30 per page helps) untill the number matched the distance. So my Edd number is 65.
Another challenge is to try and raise that.

So, another question.

It is possible to see someones activity as it actually happens? I guess like a check in function from spot's rather than a full on tracker

Not to the best of my knowledge. It stores up the ride and uploads it in one. AFAIK if you use a smartphone to record it you can switch off 3G, it doesn't speak to the server until you're done. It will soon have/or has a notification that a segment is coming up so that will involve some live conversation between device and the strava servers. At that point I'm siding with Rob Mac. :)

You can with Endomondo and (I think) ViewRanger

Just an update on copymysport.com, it works a treat and will bulk upload your old data from Garmin connect

Quick (hopefully) question ... my S/H edge 200 has arrived this morning and because I'm male I've not bothered to look at the instructions, so can anyone tell me what happens with multi-day rides? Say you set off on Sat and ride for 6 hours then camp up for the night. The next morning you carry on from where you left off and continue back to Sat starting point.

Will it pick up from where it left off and record Sat and Sun as a continual ride or 2 seperate ones?

I know on my Garmin there is a single GPX file for a two day bivi ride. When I upload it to some websites I get asked if I want to upload one day or all. However this is the website's software splitting the data points up.

With regards Strava, this was done with a Garmin: http://www.strava.com/activities/104407578
As you can see there is a seperate 'moving time' and 'elapsed time'.

Time 11:49:04
Elapsed Time 48:34:40

In fact, it is hard to spot where I slept (at the 61 mile mark). Strava isn't interested in the stopping parts which is a shame in a way because a flag to say 'long pause here' would have been good.

In fact, I didn't delete or reset the garmin for the above ride since the BB200 so when uploaded is said I'd done several hundred miles over the period of several weeks. It has a nice crop mechanism to chop off the unwated bits from the start or end of a ride if you forget to put the start or end in the right place.

For multi day rides, I always reset (hold down lap reset) until the odometer zeroes as this allows the unit to convert the data to a FIT file. I've had several instances where I power off and then on again and the ride has been lost (mostly if I run out of battery or there is an interruption whilst I upload immediately after a ride).

Did a ride yesterday which I had to load onto Garmin Connect before transferring to Strava first as using a Dakota.

So using the same file Connect found 1,446m of climb and Strava 1,206m climb, a difference of 20% (based on Strava). This seems an incredibly high variance, anybody else discovered this significant error. Ever had a look to see which is more accurate or know what causes it?

You can upload direct to Strava from the Dakota

I've used various GPS devices and mapping programmes over the years. There is always a variance and 20% is nothing out of the ordinary. Seems like it's to do with recording intervals and the height data used by the mapping program. IN general you'll get more accurate figures if you are going up and down a hill than you will if traversing.

Thanks Scotroutes. 20% difference seems excessive. I know which I will be using for year end stats though;-)

BTW, it tells me the Dakota is not acceptable and others have said the same earlier in thread. Not to fussed as the data is in 2 places now though will be a faff for multi-day adventures.

To upload to Strava, just connect the Dakota to your PC then choose "Upload Activity"... "From File" and use the normal Explorer interface to find the GPX folder on the Dakota. It'll handle multiple files.
