Greenmug, here's a brief overview of some possible ways from Grinton near Reeth (sent a couple of gpx's to Chew)
First one from Grinton or Reeth - a challenge of a climb up to Fremington Edge, good tracks generally, a circular loop over Hurst Moor ending up in Langthwaite. You can also go west from Hurst directly to Langthwaite... excellent riding.
Then a few options from Langthwaite:
Over to Great PInseat then Little Punchard Head to Great Punchard Gill - interesting ST - BW over the peat moor, much better if dry, a bit vague in parts. Then when you meet William Gill there is a BW over to Tan Hill Inn - I did that about 5 years ago, not too rideable but could be if used more... (William Gill is the option I've used previously - it's a good hard surface but it may be a FP... perhaps it has been upgraded ? It should be... however at the end of it you have 3 miles of road to TH Inn.

Other ideas can follow...
From TH Inn excellent riding down to north of Muker _ leaving the BW across the Swale becomes a FP just a short distance to Muker, option is to stay north of the river (good track becomes a tarmac surface all the way down to Gunnerside)
Or:
From Great Pinseat head for Blakethwaite Gill on good tracks... then descend into Blakethwaite Gill and use a very tricky ST down the gill - it's a BW (not advisable to fall off in some parts ! I did once and tumbled downwards towards the stream - not quite in the most perilous bit fortunately - after 2 somersaults I saw the bike going past, stuck out an arm, and caught it ! I was ok (at the time) but later on in the pub, I had a job to walk)
It becomes Gunnerside Gill with a very good track going all the way to Gunnerside.
From there you could head east for Low Row (BW) then minor road over river to pick up BW leading to Apedale Road (which is a track), leading to Castle Bolton, then Carperby,Aysgarth etc... many options going south from there.
