35mm smart sams came in the post yesterday, they are more like 500g each rather than the 450g they were supposed to be. They do look pretty tough and looking at the tread in the flesh I am hopeful they will be a good compromise for me. Now they are on the bike I reckon I did have room for 40mm and still a little clearance on the chainstays, but nevermind.

bah. Got an email telling my chosen tyres are out of stock untill december. Some use that is!

Got to choose some more now.

I wonder if the straggler would fit 1.8 or 2.0 mtb tyres

Hmm. I managed to fit a 1.75 Marathon Mondial in OK, so I would ideally like something 42-45mm. I don't think it's worth moving up from the 35mm (actually 32) Maxxis Raze to 39mm.....

I'll be interested to hear if the Kenda's hold sealant / air then. The last mtb Kenda's I tried wouldnt stay on the rim. (Small Block 8 / Crest)

Nope ... the glitter remains suspended in the sealant.

A slight loss of air after a few hours, resulted in me topping the front tyre up with a track pump. All was going well until the loudest bang I've ever heard ... result: Tyre off rim, buckled wheel, me covered in glittery sealant and loss of hearing in left ear, which still hasn't returned after 14 hours :?

Maybe it's the tyres or maybe it's the rim or just a mismatch between them.

I'm sorry, but the image of you covered in glittery goo I found quite funny

Ultraseal and other motorbikey type tyre puncture sealant things use rubber crumb bits instead of magical glitter, maybe that's where you went wrong

Covered in glitter, forget the cycling, go to the ball :D .

So, after my chosen tyres were out of stock I've finished up with some conti cycloX-king.

I tried pretty hard to get them to inflate tubeless with the track pump but they wouldnt go up.

Once I obtain some more sealant and find my little valve adapter thingie I will likely have a go at the petrol station air pump, that should do it!
Until then, I'm using tubes unfortunately.

Looking at the amount of clearance I have left over in the frame I would say that I could fit some of the smaller 1.8 size tyres which may give more tubeless options.

Once I obtain some more sealant, buy some glitter and find my little valve adapter thingie I will likely have a go at the petrol station air pump, that should do it!

My cyclo x king wouldn't inflate at first but after applying a couple more layers of electrical tape they both went up really easily

If you're adding glitter to stans, may as well try the full homebrew and mix latex with a bit of water? Works better than stans ime and loads cheaper but needs peeling out of the tyre every now and then.

Hmm, all this getto stuff is getting so cheap I might try it on my bonty rhythmn rims - when using tubes they pop onto the rims anyway

At uni we used 20" BMX Tubes as the rim tape (Well some people did) and it worked some of the time

Hmm, you've got me actually considering tubeless for the first time ever - I wonder if I could get it to work on my bonty SSR disc rims (700c) on the commuter bike with some schwalbe durano plus tyres - bonty say that the TLR rims work with their own gooo...but I would have thought goo is interchangeable
It's the puncture protection I'm after.

Cheers for that link Jameso - just purchased a couple of superstar valve cores, that tape and some stans (have a new tyre waiting to be fitted to the bike), so will see how it goes. My first foray into tubeless - wow how high tech I am

I tried some Conti Cyclocross Race. Completely horrible and lasted about 1 month before they both split the side walls. Not great protection. Avoid!

So I was laughing at this the other week.

So I had my first go at going tubeless on my 700c bonty ssr disc wheels with schwalble durano tyres. Managed to get them up with a track pump - the valve itself was leaking a tiny bit, so was doing that up when - kabang, the tyre flew off the tyre :?
Garage and myself covered in stans... no glitter though coz I learnt from Stu's mistake

Had another go, the tyre is still up 12 hours later, so we'll so how well it fairs on the commute. It didn't take much effort to get them up second time round, nicely seated in the rim, valve will be the weakest point I guess.
