I know that around here everyone's eyes are drawn to that lovely bit of grass in the background as a lovely place to pitch.

I've been told by a disgruntled rider that I can't organise an event just because I've done a couple of events myself.

Which in itself might not be a wrong statement....but then I wonder what kind of qualifications should one have to become a REAL unsupported bikepacking event director/organiser?

Hopefully the new bikepacking body will enlighten us all.

Two completely different skills I would say. I reckon I’d be better at organising a race than racing itself :-bd

Succinct and to the point, end of thread
.
What if you have one but not touched it in say, 20 years? Not looked at it, nor thought of it, except for "my gosh, I really should throw a few things away".
That's not a cyclist in books. But then my uncle kind of proves the opposite; he used to do loads of road riding. He'll be 80 year young soon. I'll ask him if he still feels like a cyclist. Bet he does, he loves all things racing, follows all them all and we can talks hours about riding, yet he's not ridden a bike in surely more than a decade.

I guess it's the mindset then...

"... if you don't shave your legs."
"... if you haven't been to Finale."
"..., where are your four panniers?"
"... if you don't think we're at war with cars."

The stuff I heard over the years is quite funny and telling more about the people paraphrasing

What would I say?
"... if you never had flies between your teeth. Smile."
"... if you never teared up from the wind."
"... if you never felt this (ride) should go on forever."
"... if you never wanted this (ride) to end emmediately."

I really like that. And going looking for the first can get you the second!

I've ridden a bike something like 6 times in the last two years for more than an hour for various reasons, I've had to come to the painful realisation that I'm a runner that identifies as a cyclist

I'm definitely not a real cyclist. It'd be weird to be defined by a single hobby, especially one as simple as riding a bike
