As above I do this too on tarps guys - find it really useful for quicky adjusting guy lengths if you want to tighten or loosen without changing the peg position and they hold really well.

The logic to them as I read it on a forum was that you could tension them from inside the shelter (you can do it form outside too. But the inside-shelter bit is particularly handy in hammock tarps.
