I don't have a bike with suspension, so it will either be the usual rigid steel 29er, or the new(ish) rigid steel 650B+ drop barred flying machine...

No and yes
I ran 34/20 last year and it was fine, apart from around the Elan valley where the headwind was so strong I nearly had to get off and push on the flat

Normally, I run 32:18, 32:19 could work - not as fit and strong as you Sean
