Did they test shorter cranks at the same time? Might be the same difference.

*edit* Ahem - this just in from a quick test - I habitually place my foot with the ball forwards of the axle. It feels way better on a flat pedal. You're grandmas safe for now! :)

I'm sure I recall there was a study done (a proper one) that concluded differently and resulted in lots of very fast people moving their cleats as far back as possible ... to the point of altering their shoes to allow more adjustment.

Trek/bontrager recommend that the centre of the cleat is 1cm back from the ball of your foot and I've noticed it makes a huge difference. Calves are less tired on longer riders and power doesn't seem to have been altered by changing position either

I’m another shimano sandal user, first used them on my jogle, it was a last minute decision. The night before I was wavering but they worked great in Scotland’s wettest ever summer, sealskin socks when it’s wet, may be even normal socks if it’s cold first thing. They dry extremely quickly as well. I’ve just bought a pair of keen cycling sandals which have a toe box, unfortunately the shimanos don’t give any protection from rocks or goose poo

I used to have something very similar. Very light, very comfortable, easy to walk in with good levels of grip but pretty much fell apart after 6 months. However, I am very heavy on shoes and nothing aside from industrial strength work boots lasts very long.

The ones I had an eVent lining which actually held up very well (didn't see whether those in the link are waterproof) ... but as we all know water will always find its way in over the top. They did dry quickly though

they do a goretex lining now by the looks of it, the hi top are too spendy for me.
