Just getting my crap together for tonights overnighter and amazingly I've managed to find almost everything I need after 3 house moves (in as many months).

Weather looking dry and unseasonably mild (hovering around 0°c) but snow conditions are currently terrible after 3 straight days of rain so it'll be an interesting ride out/up to the spot I have in mind.

Lights charging, stove fuel and food being bought this afternoon and I think I'm good to go!

Hopefully a good start to the BAM 2018 - can't wait.

A nice little 6 miler from the front door to bag the first one and my mates first bivvy and on his debut fat bike ride. A cold easterly wind but we had shelter in this old coastguard lookout post

May have to pass this month due to a bereavement, and the time it's taking for the hospital to release her + trying to arrange a funeral here is bad enough but have to also arrange a mass back in Ireland , bloody mother in law ,was as awkward in life as she is in death

Ticked off my January bivvy at the weekend too. Had to get the kids to bed before I could even pack the bike so rolled out from the house at about quarter to ten.



Headed West, then crossed the Dee and made my way up through Durris Forest, where I found myself a nice hidey hole under the trees.


Woke up just before sunrise with frozen feet and bright skies above.


Dropped out of the forest for a cold road section at about -8 and then climbed up to the wind farm on Meikle Carewe in the rising sun.






Next was a drop off the side of the hill and some more climbing to the other end of Durris Forest.


Finally, some speedy ice riding through the forest and eventually back home along the Deeside way.


Looking forward to February's effort!

Jan 18 - Surrey Hills 1/12

First BAM of the year completed and the first since spectacularly failing in June last year.

I remember writing up 03/17 and saying the hard months were now done done and it was all down hill from here - well I didn't even get round to posting my WRT report or the one taking the wife up the South Downs Way. Not really a lack of motivation but the good life just got in the way; holidays and long weekends away combined with the lack of focus on a real adventure rather than quick nights out to comply with BAM rules. 2018 will see the arrival of baby jamin no 2 in May so I suspect a similar story may unfold for 2018!

A 40 mile round trip from home on saturday 6th leaving at 19.00 and returning at 12.00 the following day. Despite advice to the contrary I couldn't resist an ebay bargain and picked up 2017 Genesis Longitude for my xmas present. This was its maiden voyage and I was impressed with 650b plus less so with my set up - some fettling required.

I had an uneventful night if a little cold, although not freezing it was windy and the cold northly wind appeared to blow right through my bivvy bag and down sleeping bag - again probably poor preparation and should have pitch my tarp into the wind. It was so long since my last BAM i forgot the format and didn't take a picture of my pitch but remembered to take one of the new bike on our way home.

I'm in! 1/12, Long Mynd.

Mates from work were going to ride around the Long Mynd today, I thought I'd join them and get my January bivvy in at the same time. Not wanting to arrive too early I didn't leave home until well after 4 pm arriving in Little Stretton at 5:30. My intention was to have a meal at the Ragleth Inn, (the one Mike and Scattamah like) But they don't open 'til six and start serving food at half past. The Green Dragon saw me proud though, with a delicious beef & ale stew and a couple of pints of Shropshire's finest. then load up and pedal through the forestry to a nice hammock spot I'd used before. Or not, 'cos I couldn't find it. I'm sure I was looking in the right place but no sign of it, even after blundering around the forest for a good (or bad) half hour. I'm wondering if the area had been felled, that's why I couldn't find it.
Eventually I pitched up in somewhere not too bad, had a brew and 6 ounces of Lidl brandy and dressed for bed. It was freezing, so I was well layered up in Merino underwear and two layers of down jackets, inside two quilts. And a hot water (platypus) bottle. Then I was too hot and had to take stuff off in the night.


In the morning a dense fog had set in, but everything was still frozen. My tarp, which at first glance seemed to be wet, was covered in frozen fog which shattered when the tarp was shaken.


Brekky.


Then ride back down the hill to meet the guys before riding back up again. We had three mechanicals between us, which reminded me of the group motorbike rides we used to have a couple of generations ago - every few miles someones' bike would conk out and the whole procession would have to stop. It could take most of the day to travel to Rhyl (40 miles)

Yeah. Tents are fine.
Though campsites are not I think are the rules.

A quite salubrious (for us anyway) old shippon whilst riding this year's winter event. So 1/1 for 2018

The various buildings, including the house, could probably have accommodated everyone who turned up this weekend.
