We really are spoilt in this country with the OS mapping, they might be a jack of all trades (who really needs to know where county constabulary boundaries are?) but I'd rather that than unreliable/missing features.gairym wrote:I used the free mapping from openmtbmap.org and it was plenty good enough (though not perfect).Chew wrote:Probably a question for Gairy......
In terms of mapping, was the gpx good enough to use with Garmin base maps or do we need to acquire some Italy mapping?
In my experience all mapping of Italy is imperfect, I don't think they've fully mapped the whole of the country yet (they're gonna finish it as soon as they've had enough coffee).

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
I'm not sure if i've found a useful Garmin map of Italy, see here-
http://cloud.depositefiles.me/?file=Garmin+Topo+Italy
I've loaded onto an sd card & tried it in my Oregon without success.
Can any of the more computer literate amongst us have a look to see if it's of any use?
Or have i downloaded a pup & my computer may implode!

That's bloody handy!
Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Is that not what we get as part of our entry fee?

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
We just got the .gpx track(s).
Might have to invest in the paper map though, just in case.

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Can anybody get the forum working correctly?
Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
It's hit and miss for me. Most of the time it only shows 1 post, then reloading the page can fix it - sometimes
Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Have tried a couple of times & can't get the forum to work either...
Got a reply from Andrea confirming that the paper map is extra..
"the official GPS track of Tuscany Trail will be provided to you by us through eamil.
The map that you saw, is a version of paper that can be purchased by the participants, only if interested."

Try this for a map to load under the GPX...made today on garmin.openstreetmap.nl...

Valid for 96 hours according to the email that came with the link. I've been trying this site out for a bit now and seems to hold a few tracks for Europe. Fingers crossed I got enough tiles on there.

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Long story short, I saw the term Strada Bianche and googled it thinking that it looked cool, then realised it's included in this trail
Purely out of interest, not going myself, how do you guys without dynamos plan to fulfil their lighting requirements and ensure batteries last till the end of the trip?

All of my gadgetry is either AA powered or chargeable via plug/USB whilst reading in cafes etc... (with a powermonkey backup in case of no place to plug in).
For most of Europe I find this system the easy but I can't compare as I've not taken the plunge and invested in a dynamo setup yet.

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Jane and I downloaded the gpx last year and rode the route. Its possibly one of the easiest routes I have ever followed. Don't underestimate the last day on the island...looks short...rides long.....
Rules of the route are.....if you can see a castle or tower on a hill far away....your going to go through it !!!! So Jealous !!

Re: Tuscany Trail 2016
Bit more info from Andrea..
I asked would there be any provision, secure or otherwise, for leaving bags at the start point in Massa, which we can collect after the event?
His reply-
"perhaps there is a chance but certainly your luggage will not be monitored"...

I'm trying to find somewhere in Pisa to store my bag that isn't the airport or station.
Otherwise I'll just send it down to the finish and bag it up there ready for the train back to Pisa. That way I'll have some civvies to wear at the end that don't smell of rancid badgers.

Suppose it could be an option for us all to chip in to have 1 or 2 bags sent down with a change of clothes in each?Taylor wrote:I'm trying to find somewhere in Pisa to store my bag that isn't the airport or station.
