Enjoys a bit of contrast does Reg. Earlier was the Towcester Brass Band in the park down the road. I like the upbeat "colliery band" tunes rather than the saccharine "Hovis advert" ones.

Now having a rare Newcy Broon to the matching tune of the Macc Lads. In a half-pint glass of course (*):

(*) and equally in a thin glarse: (**)

(**) Get Carter (***).. well it's now necessary to watch one of my favourite scenes, Caine and Hendry at the top of their game:

(***) as one of the comments says.. 1971.. good year for gritty films... GC... French Connection.....

We had James, Elbow & Madness playing on separate nights in Ludlow Castle a couple of weeks ago.
We're tight so we just went into town and sat in The Blue Boar beer garden and listened to the bands.
Elbow ain't my bag.
Madness have done way more 'HITS' than people think !!
I wish I'd forked out to see James. Was never a massive fan back in the day, weren't really Alternative enough for me, but listening now they've done some brilliant stuff.
Loads of people grumbling because they didn't play "Sit Down" ... apparently they rarely do.

Periodically search out Youtube to hear Radiohead do an excellent cover of Joy Division's Ceremony. It's not a song needing a cover particularly, but this one's particularly good.

This interrupted my listening of Napalm Death's "Throws of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism" which is pretty damn good. "The Code is Red, Long Live the Code" has actually become my fav album from the Napes though.

Well, I'm sitting in my room, so......

Thank you Joey, 1981. In fact the whole "Pleasant Dreams" album was pretty good.

A rather different genre that I enjoy belting my eardrums with: 1960's "girl groups", often drenched in oceans of echo, of which The Ronettes were one of the most accomplished. Very powerful delivery from Ronnie Spector still on top of her game and having a whale of a time 43 years after the original....

I'm booking a trip to Iceland at the moment, and saw there's reykjavik's large concert venue right near one of our hotels...

Skálmöld are playing, never heard of them before but "folk metal" is quite the experience! A bit like Lordi (2006 Eurovision winners, from Finland) and surprisingly listenable! One kid agrees with me, the other one and my wife thinks I'm daft. Might try for a pair of last minute tickets, except in standard Icelandic fashion even the cheap seats are £50!

Oh. Not as different as I thought. The CD (*) has just arrived and the sleeve notes explain that the album is a throwback to "girl groups of the 60s".

(*) For the youngsters: CD: a digital optical disc data/music storage and retrieval/playback medium. Far better than streaming. Far worse than vinyl.

Just bought the latest Godspeed You! Black Emperor album (digital download) and having a first listen, very loudly in headphones. Will probably follow up with the CD at some point as I like to have physical copies of stuff I love. I'm a huge GSY!BE fan for over 20 years, so I expect it'll be a decent listen, they invariably are.

My mate was chatting to his daughter's boyfriend and it turned out his step Dad is/was Napalm Death's lead singer - I presume Barney Greenway (ex Extreme Noise Terror and others). Tom's a big indie music fan, so was pretty chuffed. Though she has since moved on to a girlfriend. Kids, eh

I'm really enjoying the English Teacher album that won the Mercury this year.

I bought a copy today too (along with The Smile LP) and I'll be putting it on a little later.

As an aside, just bought tickets to see Spiritualized play Pure Phase in Glasgow in March. Something to look forward to.

Barney is the acest bloke ever. All the Napalm Death gigs I’ve been to he’s there in the bar chatting to anyone and everyone. Same with the rest of the band. Top blokes

So, first listen over. Yes, all pretty good to these ears. Especially liked 'Babys In A Thundercloud', 'Raindrops Cast In Lead' and 'Grey Rubble - Green Shoots' I first played at 45rpm instead of 33rpm. It sounded good at both speeds

Stereophonics (right now, Dakota)

In Swansea, while daughter is having a lesson on a bigger motorbike.

Last night, same daughter practicing on her bass guitar in our living room.

Thought I was mostly a bit done with rock, but listening to her playing, and finding out that she's getting a band together with some guys from work (brilliant band name proposal: Tommy and the Pumpouts), has got me all excited and rummaging around in my memory bank of stuff I used to listen to back in the day....

Motorbikes and playing bass in a band, love being a parent to this girl

Anyone live in Morecambe?

Does hairdryer granny play in the band?

If John Shuttleworth appears with them on stage with his sausage roll thumb then book me a ticket now!

What a curious little oddity.

I've heard them on 6 music a few times - much better than the insipid dross that station seems to have been invaded with in recent years. Even Riley and Coe are made to play it....
