memory maps on garmin etrex20??

Hi all does anyone know if i memory map maps are usable on garmin etrex models, can send them to a sd card in unit but unit doesnt seem to be able to find them?? Any ideas or are they just not compatible.

The only way I was able to get OS mapping onto an eTrex 20 was to either buy a Garmin sd card with them on (expensive) or buy mapping tiles from Garmin ... nothing else seemed to work.
