Stan's ZTR Crest Rims

Post by didnothingfatal »

Well it seems Geax tyres and Stan's rims are a bit of a dog to fit together. Anybody running these rims, if so with what tyres?

I got them with Ardents and Crossmarks.
I have just got a sugauro from on one but not tried fitting it yet.

The Maxxis and kenda's I've had on, slip on quite nicely with no wrestling like you read on STW. I suspect there's a lot of hamfistedness going on on those threads.

29er Crests here.

No problems at all getting Schwalbe Racing Ralph (2.2"), Nobby Nic (2.2") or Bonty MudX (2.0") on.

I've also successful fitted a 35mm CX Racing Ralph tubeless on them, again easy to fit.

I bought two Schwalbe Racing Ralph (2.2") to put on Stans Crest, and could only get one on. No chance with the other. I tried on both wheels.

I'm new to tubeless and wondered whether the tyre was out of tolerance or something and I needed to send it back? However after riding for a while on the Ralph I did fit, I had to take all the cactus thorns out and found the tyre came off and went back on far easier.

I'm wondered if there is a method to this everyone knows but me? Like putting the tight tyre on a different rim and riding it to loosen it up before fitting back on other rim? I've not tried this yet as I'm still wondering whether to send the tyre back.

I have to admit, mine were both ran with tubes before going tubeless but the ardent went straight onto the Crest but the crossmark was onto another rim.

I have a feeling I read about a faulty batch of Schwalbes that wouldn't go onto rims or something similar. If it was MTBers complaining it must've been on STW somewhere. ;)

I quantify my statement by saying my Ralphs are the slightly older evo snakeskin ones that On One were doing for ~£20 each last year. However my Nobby Nic was new from Chalie Bikemonger in January-ish and went straight on no problems; also evo snakeskin version. Both run tubeless from the off, and held air with a Stans rim strip & valve using a trackpump to inflate and without needing a tube to begin with.

Did some research evidently I'm not the only with major issues fitting Geax tyres ZTR rims, some stuff on Twentynineinches.com

LBS had Crossmarks in stock, so the bike should be quick, but lethal in anything wet and rooted :?
