Luxe Mini Peak II - Thoughts?

Post by ootini »

I've decided my current tent (Yellowstone Alpine 2) is not particularly good, so I'm looking at an upgrade and willing to spend around £100. For just over this budget I can get the Luxe Mini Peak 2, but was hoping to get a bit of insight from those who may know more about it than me.

Firstly, it appears that the inner connects to the outer using just a simple S hook up top, but it's difficult to tell from the images how it connects around the sides at ground level. Anyone actually pitched one of these tents?

The other thing is the tent is marketed as a 2 man tent, but surely if you pop two inner tents inside this thing, with the doors facing one another you can no longer get in or out of it. Am I correct in thinking it should be a 1 man tent with big porch if using an inner, and a 2 man tent as long as you don't both want an inner tent?

I guess my other question is, are there any alternatives to a sub 1.5Kg tent, around £100 that packs small and can be used outer only as and when required?

Inner just pegs down at the corners.

Think of it as a massive 1 man tent when the inner's in place.

I can't think of anything that offers the same amount of room.

Remember that you'll need to budget for a pole too.

True. I reckon £27.50 for a four section pole up to 150cm should do the trick.

If I fancied using the Mini Peak as a tarp tent without the inner, is it possible to a buy a small bathtub type ground sheet just to slot under the sleeping matt and bag? As opposed to going the bivi route and having to put up with the condensation build up? Ta

It is, cheapest, high quality one I know of is by Trekkertent: http://www.trekkertent.com/home/home/19 ... lth-1.html

Other option is a non-bathtub, so pretty much anything will do, Tyvec, plastic sheet, etc.

I have the original model, I have only used it once as a full tent. I got it for using the outer as a mid on its own in winter, and the mesh inner with my cuben shelter in summer(bloody midges :| ) I used my bathtub floor with it fine, though I may get a mid sized tyvek footprint for using on the snow. http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelt ... WB107.html

Outer only it is massive, plenty of room for getting all your gear under cover and enough cover for cooking under too, with the door open. With the inner in it is still roomy, esp if you drop the inner when not in it so you can use it as a groundsheet with all that head room.
I have set mine up so that I can clip the peg out points on the inner, to the outer loops with shock cord, so I only need to pitch the outer properly for the inner to be tensioned well too.

I really fancy a cuben mid, just for the weight saving, but it is costly. Generally I prefer mids to tents now given the space-weight ratio, and these are amazing value IMO.
I think the outer on the newer one is lighter than mine, which is around 750gm I think.
For the 2 person I think it has a larger inner, rather than 2 singles facing each other.

iv,e got the one with 2 zips, lots of room as previously stated drop the inner to sit on to get changed etc, only down side was on the winter ride thing the corner peg blew out, so I bought 4 longer ones for the corners, also if it is windy it has a big surface area so I try to pitch it with the corner pointing to the wind, also make sure you peg the zip down when windy,
on the whole a great tent, can be put up in a couple of mins worth carting the extra weight for the comfort, my inner has the same hook up system on the bathtub to the outer it goes to 4 preset points, as stu says you,ll need a pole
it's not that I can and others can't, it's that I will and others won't.
