Long mynd Shropshire area. Routes etc

Post by Adventurer »

Looking to join up some good bikepacking routes in the long mynd area. Not just long mynd itself but surrounding area too.

Would be most helpful as planning a weekend next weekend.

Could you suggest good areas, routes or bridleways, happy to join up country lanes.

Plenty of good riding from Brown Clee, across the valley and along Wenlock Edge, across the dale to the back side of the Caradoc, around/over Long Mynd and Stiperstones on the other side. South of there, you can play on the Shropshire Way in places, Bury Ditches, Kerry Ridgeway and more. Further south/west you'll be over the border and into Radnor/TCW territory.

I'm due out for a bivvy...if you're keen, sing out here - http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB ... f=8&t=5906

Every time I go to the Long Mynd I seem to end up getting pissed in The Bridges. There is a youth hostel a minutes walk away too, so that's food, drink and accommodation sorted.

Thanks for the ideas for routes.

I'm going to put my own route together but can anyone point me in the direction for selection of routes that will have a GPX file attached.

I can link bridleways with roads and some off road bits. But all I can find in road only cycling routes, MTB only routes which seem to be concentrated on long mynd and bridleways routes for horsey types.

So these are good but not really aimed at bike packing.

If you could help I would be most grateful.

Generally apart from the obvious ITT routes, etc there really aren't any.

Can you not just join bits from each until you have something you fancy riding? Making mistakes is all part of the fun ... make tyre tracks, don't follow them

I've been looking at my OS maps and a few routes on line and looking to make my own. Would like to try a few bridleways as well but hopefully they are passable on a bike and also not churned up by horses hoofs.

One thing I have noticed is that some bridleways just stop and then turn into a official marked footpath. What do you do with this sort of situation. Turn around or carry on. Why have a bridleways that goes nowhere?

Sometimes you just won't know until you get there. Just because someone rode it yesterday and proclaimed how great it was, doesn't mean 30 horses haven't been down it this morning

If there's no one about and the chances of conflict are minimal ride it. If not, push.

Because they used to go somewhere.

They still go somewhere, but there's generally a lot of bracken and nettles to carve through. Part of the adventure.
