This isn't so much a question of how you carry your Spares, but how inventive can you get?
Now saddlebags are out of fashion,( or ironically...people are going back to old tool rolls) how else can you sneak a few spares onto your bike?
Taping tubes to frames seems to have hit mainstream on trails, but I'm seeing more professional approaches with straps and elastic by various companies, and I've made a few myself, anyone else do this?
And as for stuffing cables and spokes into foam and into bars/seat tubes, how effective is this in practice? As I have doubts as to potential rattles or wear inside the frame
Lastly...and quite contradictory to my first question....is hiding extra parts on your bike a good way to prepare for mechanicals and long tours? Or just a case of ninja overpacking?
After all, isn't our aim to go light?
tools and spares storage?

Re: tools and spares storage?
When have Bike Packers worried about fashion?
I've got saddlebags on each and every bike, all loaded ready to ride out of the door, so I don't waste riding time faffing while looking for this and that.

Re: tools and spares storage?
Roadies have stuffed spare tubes in the saddle rails for many years so not exactly new.
My road bike has a small saddle bag (contravenes rule #29) with the tools and spares I need.
For off-road riding I have a small plastic canister that my bottom bracket came in this has tools and some spares (chain quick link), I haven't weighed it but it's probably 200-300 grammes. A general rule is to have things to hand in order of likely use. Obviously you aren't looking for a breakdown but having to remember where you put the cleverly stored part isn't that helpful when you come to actually using it -KISS.

Better weight than wisdom, a traveller cannot carry

I am speaking as someone who owns 4 small saddlesbags built and packed ready*
However, what happens when you use a seatbag for a bivi trip, and you have already filled your top tube bags? (or like me, too short to stand over the bike without sitting on them)
*I have also broken just as many, the Velcro and zips always seem to fail when stuffed full or rattle and fly off when not

Re: tools and spares storage?
I've never been a fan of having stuff taped or strapped to the outside of the bike after too many experiences of them going awol - usually discovered in the middle of nowhere when you need them. Everything goes into a bag - bottom of frame bag if its fitted or gas tank if its not. Spares goin in a ziploc bag in a nylon drawstring bag I found lying about.

I have a medium Alpkit top tube bag against the seatpost which has two tubes and all my tools in.
