Trans Cambrian trail........and more

Post by ton »

just spent the last week doing probably the best weeks natural trail ride i have ever done. obviously the weather paid it's part. wales in good sunlight is simply vaguely exciting.
started with the trans cambrian route on sunday a.m. the next time we saw anyone on the trail was on tuesday teatime 1 mile from Mach.
this route is stunning. gpx i got from off here was spot on. back up paper os map was hardly needed.
the highlight of these 3 day was pretty hard to pinpoint, but the views from the top of Foel Fadian out to the coast were stunning, and the following descent down it's flanks were super.

the second half of the week was spent riding from Mach to Betws y coed.
the 1st day was on tracks through the forest on the right of the Dovey valley, then a climb and descent on a fantastic track from just to the wesy of Cwrt over to Bryngrug. a proper rocky blast for my pals on Orange fs bikes. a bit steadier for me on my hardtail.
after some coffee and cake at the pub, we headed over route 82 to Hafoty Fach and down onto the Mawddach trail to Kings yha for the night.
next day we headed to Barmouth and on to the Pont scethin route, but rather than dropping all the way back to the Bontddu, we navigated some tracks above Taicynhaeaf, and eventually dropping to the road at Ty ny Groes. stunning dh descent.
a spin up through the forest tracks for a pint at the trail center, then more of the same up to the Rhiw Goch inn for the night.
the last day was a ride rount the lake and powerstation at Trawsfynnyd . we then did a bit of getting lost, as in knowing where we were heading, the the tracks did not follow on the ground.
we eventually got to the track at the side of Pont tal y bont with a mega steep down and back up to cross over and up to Llan Ffestiniog. after lunch we headed up the lane to the quarries at Manod via cwm tiegal, we spent a good hour or so looking round the pld qurries and in some caves/tunnels, before following the pain trod over to the forest to the right of Moel Penamnen (not Penmachno). the bw doen through the forest is like a proper nps dowhill track. very tricky. then a fantastic fast spin down the the pub at Dolwygellan.

a simply stunning and fantastic weeks riding. 213 miles of riding with very little on roads, and 24300 ft of climbing.

Wales is ace. pics to follow

Special place that there Wales. The TCW is really remote in parts, and you could easily live on the route and not see a soul for weeks.

Some of my favourite trails you have done there, looking forward to the pics.
