29+ Almost

Post by FLV »

As mentioned before, I am guilty of faffing around with my bikes set up.

To this end, I got a pair of second hand suspension forks that reputedly had the best clearance for 29x3 inch tyres of flea bay in order to fit them to my krampus, see how it goes (trying new things is good).

Fun to ride something different, a little more comfort (particularly for my dodgy right hand), fun to ride, perhaps felt a little faster on the properly rough stuff. Minor niggles are increased weight and not much mud clearance so once the chronicles picked a bit of dirt up you could then hear little stones pinging off the brace, no big deal I guess.

Image

Then, I decided that a smaller tyre at about a 2.75 like the 27.5+ wtb ones might work well. Save a bit of weight, keep some of the 29+ ride and have extra clearance. A small amount of research showed that panaracers fat B nimble were supposedly smaller. So, I bought some and fitted them to a set of wheels built with blunt 35's and smaller they are...

just look at all that clearance! Lighter too at 750g so not bad all.

they measure up as follows:
Dually 45mm + Chronicle = 74mm / 76mm casing / tread
Blunt 35mm + FatB Nim = 67.5mm casing (tread is a sniff narrower)

Anyway, thought I'd share in case it was of any use.
How it rides remains to be seen later on today.

Thanks for that dave.

I assume that's the 29+ version of the panaracer fat B? Good to have measurements, I want to fit something fatter in the back of my Triton, but chronicle is TOO big.

Thats right gabe, 29x3 on the sidewall but measures 2.65 on the calipers of truth. I can offer it up in a salsa el mariachi if that helps?

Interesting. Might be tempted to try one of those in my (old) Swift fork (which won't take a Chronicle on a Dually.

I'm sure I saw somewhere that fat b nimbles were also available with the actual manufacturers logos more cheaply, as least in full fat sizes. Are these the same?

Got to be worth a try at £25 delivered!?

New swift fork should take that. I had the same problem, but got a newer one off Sam.
I've got a Knard on a dually fitted OK but looking to get a chronicle

Hey where'd my post go...

I was saying. Johnnystorm. That ones wired and heavier. No clue if it's the same tread though.

Also. They popped up tubeless easy with my pop bottle inflator

Dave ... don't suppose you've tried the Nimble on a Dually have you?

Nope. I haven't. I wanted to leave the Chronicles on there for swapping wheels back and forth.

From trying knards on duallys and blunts I'd expect a flatter shape on the tread and only slightly wider, 2mm maybe. But thats an assumption.

If you NEED to know, I could do it I expect, but not today.

No, I don't need to know Dave (thanks for the offer). I'm considering sticking one on the front of the Stooge as a way of shedding a little weight. I don't need masses of grip and probably don't require the volume of the Chronicle that's fitted.

It would have no problem fitting then. Its a lighter tyre than an Ardent too as mine were a genuine 750g. Durability is yet to be proven as the side walls feel thinner than chronicles.

Hey Stu, if you decide to get rid of the Chronicle I'd be interested. Either for the Rooster (on again, off again enthusiasm) or something I'm going to leave up at the Lakes van.

I'll bear it in mind CM, although it'll probably makes its way into the 'rainy day' tyre pile ... I'm working on topping 14 foot
