Keeping glasses clean/smudge free, any tips?

Post by Ray Young »

I wear bifocals all the time but my distance vision for driving is borderline so I can get away with just reading glasses to see the route on my GPS. Problem is that I sweat a lot so get drips from my eyebrows dripping onto the back of the lens and rain/mist on the front. When that happens I can't see the GPS. Cleaning the glasses on my jersey tends to just smear things. I can dry them with tissue then clean them with a lens cloth but this means stopping, getting the tissue etc out then putting it back which can time consuming and frustrating. So, any tips to help keep them clean in the first place or speed up the cleaning process?
I am thinking of adding some sweat band to the inside of the helmet to help with sweat drips.

I keep the bag my glasses came in, in my fuel tank where it's easy to get to. Pull over for a second, grab the bag, flip it inside out and clean away. Costs a minute or so but it's nice to have clear vision. A soft cloth will do the same thing.

That gutter looks like an April Fool joke - have you tried it?

It is a problem I have every time it rains, which usually results in ditching glasses and squinting on the descents hoping I don't get mud in my eye. Not a strategy I would recommend...!

I tend to find just using a cleaning cloth just spreads the dirt/grease around the lens, then when you do get a bit sweaty the moisture has something to cling onto and they fog up again.

I use this on the Motorbike helmet and have been using it on my riding glasses recently and it working well.

Give them a good clean before you go out at it seems to stop the majority of the fogging. If they do fog up, just leave them for a while to clear by themselves.

I use neat APC to clean mine - which will be pretty similar to that stuff. Those spray bottles are perfect for application of cleaning liquid on glasses.

Vented lenses help massively to stop them fogging up, providing you're not stationary (it needs air movement obvs!)

I believe the likes of Rain-X are the best ways to keep water and mist to minimum. As suggested, keep a good cleaning cloth close to hand. Oakley's bags live in my jersey pockets.
