Verifying ITT Route Adherence and Completion Time?

Post by Ray Young »

Just wondering what acceptable methods are used to verify ITT route compliance and completion time?

Gpx file is probably the easiest way Ray. However, I do think a certain amount of trust and honour needs to be applied when dealing with ITT

SPOT trace will also do, but isn't as accurate.

I think an element of trust for the known majority should be applied. However exceptional performances demand exceptional proof...

Although I'd also say that "your race, your rules" applies too!

I was hoping for this sort of response as it echo's my own feelings, just thought I'd check. Thanks, :-bd .

The thing is - just about any system can be cheated if an individual so desires. There's an ultra-marathon in South Africa called The Comrades, it's a 90Km run. In 1999 a pair of brothers tried to cheat - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 08099.html and very nearly got away with it.

Like Stu says, it's an honour based system, short of shackling a SPOT or similar device to the rider at some point you have to trust what someone says/claims. GPX files are plain text and can be manipulated. A SPOT device could be transferred between riders, effectively a relay. ITTs are pretty low key in the general scheme of things, even the bigger "events" have very few entrants. If I claimed to have done the HTR550 in 3 1/2 days then I'd expect all the evidence I provided to be pored over and examined in detail, if I did it in eight days then it wouldn't get quite the same level of scrutiny - the extraordinary claims scenario mentioned above.

I've been involved with sorting out such an extraordinary claim in a different sport, again with an honour system, and it's not pleasant - the individual involved might best be described as having "emotional" problems.

Back to the OP: just get on and do it!

Sounds good to me. I have only ever entered one ITT before and they asked for a gpx track if you wanted an official time publishing. Not having to verify times etc will save me work, all I'll need to do is post up the finish times.

Thanks for all the responses.

I you have a Garmin unit then grabbing the GPX file isn't particularly hard. The only problem I had with the YD300 was that I logged it as 4 files, partly due to battery life and partly due to the number of points in a file that the 510 can handle. I just put them in to fitfiletools.com to combine them.

Do you have a lot of info on your website about the bob graham round? If so I found it very useful when preparing for mine! (1417)
