Potential stupid Q - Fat Bike mech'.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

I've started thinking about putting my collection of fat bike bits together and my attention has turned to gearing.

How do you go on with front mech's? Do you require something odd to allow for the 100mm BB (E-type or similar) or does a normal mech' work okay.

I'm sure the answer will be blindingly obvious or very complicated

Oh and while I've got your attention, does anyone run a single ring in the granny ring position ... 26t / 28t?
May the bridges you burn light your way

My Mukluk had one of these problem solvers fitted

I'm going 1 x 10 on my new Fat Bike with a choice of 30T for the hills and with a swap over a 36T for the flat lands around here

Oh, and the El Guapo HDM clamp shown on the same page and a HDM front mech, sorry forgot that bit. God knows why they call it an El Guapo part as the EG comes with a 73mm BB.

I use a single 30t ring. Wouldn't run a single ring on the granny position though. Drive chain will suffer even more.

yep run my sons Fatty single ring in the granny position, 9spd rear, you need to watch the crank spacing an maybe fine tune it for your specific bike, but it works okay.

will probably go through chains a bit more often but with the amount of muck/ dust/ grit the fat tyres lift onto the chain anyway, its going to have a short life, so a bit of sideways bending isn't an issue in my world.

cheers Roddy
