Wanted - something for nothing!

I've got a forum request.....

Does anyone have an old (as in well-used and no longer worth anything) 4 bolt big chainring that they'd be willing to part with for nothing more than postage and an 'I owe you a pint' token???

I ask as I bastardised my 1x9 69er in order to convert my main MTB into a 1x9 and so am looking to rebuild the 69er and I need an old large chainring to angle-grind the teeth off of to use as a bash-guard/outer chain-guide.

If you're looking to make some easy money then maybe look elsewhere as I can get a used/knackered big chainring on eBay for a couple of quid (+ postage) but I was hoping that someone here might have something laying around that they'd be happy to donate to a good home.

In recompense for this good-deed I'm more than happy to receive, grind-off the teeth, file-down and return any chainrings if anyone else would like to utilise the same idea for the same purpose.

(I honestly don't understand why more people don't use this ultra-light solution when they need a chain-guard for a 1x9/2x9 set-up).

Let me know and we can work out the logistics.

I've never needed a chainguard for 1x9?

A single stainless-steel ring, in 32-38ish size, with a chain wrapped around it is more than man enough for me to smash into things without ever bending it.

No more ultralight, than nowt itself :)

it's more a chain-guide than a chain-guard (despite that being how i worded it).

don't you find your chain jumps off when you're in the higher gears going over rocky terrain?

I ran a MRP 1x9 device for 3 years for that very reason. When I bought my 29er last month I built it without it on, just to see if it did actually jump it's chain.

Nearly 400k in and it hasn't done it once. I'm suprised I have to say because I haven't been holding back and I'm now running a rigid fork which must rattle things around a bit more too.

i've got all those things (well, the Surly chainring is in the post) and so will try it without first.

i'd prefer it if i didn't need to use something to keep it on but.....if i do i prefer the ground chainring idea to a chain device.

I believe I've got one in a cupboard here at work (an old 44T Shimano).

I can check after 1330 Hrs when the room's free and I can access it. If so I can probably pop it in the post this afternoon.
