What Cross Bike (again)
So, due to circumstances I may well be looking for a cross bike again.
The last one I had was far too heavy in the end (surly straggler) so I never really rode it, it was heavier and slower than my 29er mtb.
It will be used as a road bike, commuter sometimes, the odd canal path and mild bridleway. But 80% will be road.
I want to put the bits from my road bike on it, I have fulcrum 5 wheels which I reckon will take mild off road for now. As such, I would prefer rim brakes.
So F+F preferred but I'm willing to look at full bikes too.
Annoyingly it seems all about disc brakes.

Re: What Cross Bike (again)
My dads got a genesis vapour from when it had cantis, set it up with mini v brakes and it's a truly lovely bike

Re: What Cross Bike (again)
What size you are? I have a Cannondale CAADX 2011-2012 frameset (size - 56cm) for sale, + all other bits (10sp 105 shifters, brand new SPA cycles chainset, everyhing else original). Just made a fresh custom repaint in Volkswagen Deep Black Pearl with Cannondale brand stickers under clear coat... Frame is alloy, about 1500gr, carbon fork, alloy steerer...

Re: What Cross Bike (again)
I'm loving the singular kite I bought off ian. I'm using it for similar purposes as you mention and I'm even running fulcrum wheels.

I had a Cube X Race a few years back. I rode it on trails that I used to only ride on my FS, yet also did a lot of road miles on it. My mate used it for our LeJog. The modern equivalent should be good assuming they've not gone disc for all their models.

If you want it to be as close to a road bike as possible, then the Wilier cross bike is well worth considering. Tested my friends and it rides lovely
Edit, just saw the below post about discs. I'd check out classifieds in cycling weekly etc for frames or look at proper cross manufacturers, I.e Ridley or similar

Ah, missed that skimming your post first time. What's wrong with discs?FLV wrote:discs.
That cube Alasdair mentions is pretty good VFM, seen it in the flesh and given one a quick spin, and has the little rim brake things you're after.

Shand Stoater..?
Lots of versatility in the frame design - he says not having ridden one, but looking forward to getting one immensely.

Halfords were knocking out the Carrera Crixus for £250...I want to put the bits from my road bike on it, I have fulcrum 5 wheels which I reckon will take mild off road for now. As such, I would prefer rim brakes.

Arkrose must be worth a look. Frame's £110 at the moment. It's got a disc mount but it'll take a caliper too.

You sure about that?s8tannorm wrote: It's got a disc mount but it'll take a caliper too.
certainly a bargain.
I like the look of the shand, but it might be weighty? and its disc.
Maybe I need to consider embracing discs?

Re: What Cross Bike (again)
I'm assuming so, there's a mounting hole in the seatstay bridge which has a threaded insert (mudguard?) but an 8mm drill would see the insert removedYou sure about that?

Re: What Cross Bike (again)
Dave. Just go to disk wheels. Keep your road bike intact.
Will you really swap there's and wheels over so you can go out on the road? Crest or arch rims work great on a CX bike if you've got some licking about...

It's just for fitting a guard, not a caliper brake. Wrong height. Or at least it is for anyone who's concerned with avoiding Meccano-related bodgery : )s8tannorm wrote:I'm assuming so, there's a mounting hole in the seatstay bridge which has a threaded insert (mudguard?) but an 8mm drill would see the insert removedYou sure about that?
We may have some 2012 v-brake Arkose 1 frames and forks left, unlikely really but I can check if you're interested (what size, if so?).

Hello
Lars here, and first post.
As with everything else its all about the money. And after UCI allowed disc brakes its difficult to find F+F without disc. But I have a Ridley from before the rule change, and use cantilever brakes. And to be honest I'd prefer the disc. But there is a good german website (I'm not german) that have all a CX heart desires. This one is Cheap, from a good producer of frames, no disc. And drilled holes for bottle cages (not allowed in competition).
