I'm changing jobs at the end of the month and have a couple of weeks off from mid jan.
I can get away for 3 or 4 days but don't have loads of spare cash currently. Plus ain't allowed abroad as my wife and kids will be at school!
Give me some suggestions for 3/4 days riding ideally not too muddy. I'm not bothered about getting mucky but would like to avoid overly soft ground. I'm based in Sheffield and would consider even a road based tour!
Probably won't have the car but am happy to get the train somewhere (even though it could cost more than a cheap flight to somewhere warm!)
Suggest away...

The North - South Divide? ... Aberystwyth to Southwold. 350 miles and 20k feet of up. You can buy a guide from mtbepicsuk.co.uk

How about the Kinder Loop from Ladybower? I rode it last March over three days at the suggestion of one of this parish. Really lovely route - just 55 miles with some rugged bits but mostly good going. Its well sign posted so navigation is a doddle but do take the OS maps. It's also just 10 miles or so from the centre of Sheffield so you can ride there and back.

Booking now you could get a single rail fare to Berwick for ~£30. Ride home on a mix of the Berwick to Derby Sustrans route and either bivvy or stay at hostels. Really quiet roads and fairly well sign posted. Could be done on a cross bike or with a few diversions on a road bike. Or carry onto Edinburgh and use the Sustrans coast route to Berwick or make it up yourself. I did a chunk of this a few months ago so got some knowledge of the route. MTB a bit overkill for most of route.
The only problem is weather in late January. Could be snow and ice forecast if you book a rail ticket in advance and may then waste the £30. Somewhere South is a better bet but busier roads overall.
Two years ago I had something similar planned at then we got a big dump of snow when I was due out (earlt April) I ended up riding North to Clumber Park and then over to Lincoln, Boston, Wisbech, Peterborough, Oakham and back to Derby in 48 hours using mostly Sustrans routes. F all climbing but at least it was a couple of days out on the bike.

Look for where the train can take you cheaply and make a nice rode home up as you go along
