Recommend me a 29er wheelset

Post by welshwhit »

So after seeing how most folk are riding 29er, I managed to get myself a second hand Scandel frame in 29er flavour to build up, as I really like my 26" version!

I. Going to build it rigid, but the wheels are providing me with too many options! I have many 'wants' but I know I won't get them all!

I'd like them to be tubeless, lightweight, bombproof(ish), oh and cheap...

Chatting to be lbs he recommended hope hoops, any other options?
thanks

I've not managed to bend my crests yet. I've got some on Hopes and some on Superstar Switch hubs. Can't tell much difference bar freewheel noise!

I thnk the Superstar wheels are hard to beat, the new ones feature the uprated Switch hubs ... for less than £150 a pair they're a good buy. I've 2 sets, one of which has done lots of miles over the last 4 years, been dragged through countless rivers and bounced off rocks and all I've ever done is change the bearings once and a quick tighten / check of the spokes.

I do like the price of those superstar wheels Stuart, do you think they could be made tubeless with generous amounts of tape?

I bought some superstar wheels a couple of years ago. had to tighten all the spokes and true the wheels myself out of the box.
The freehub didnt last long either. But, many other people seem to like them.

Budget dependent but I would likely look at DT350 hubs on stans arch for lightweight and solid or blunt 35's for wide. Sapim spokes are cheaper than dt and last just as well too.
Both work tubeless.

If you can build yourself wtb rims can be found very cheap and work tubeless.

I've got them to seal in the past okay.

If you really want something a bit more 'upmarket' it might be worth have a word with Shona and Rich at Keep Pedalling, I'm sure they'd be able to sort you out with something custom.

I have 2 sets of Super star wheels. The switch evo hubs themselves have been fine, good value for money. One pair the build were fine. The other pair I built the front wheel myself and that has been great, the other one I bought from them built and I have snapped quite a lot of spokes and its needed truing a lot.

I use DTSwiss350's on my lurcher and I love those, they have the same internals as the 240's just a forged shell instead of CNC machined. Stay away from the 340's though as they are the cheaper internals.

Have a set of superstars too. Well, had.
I had quite exactly the same issues like FLV.

Next to cracking the rim... that is.

But, their warranty does work.

Hope and No Tubes (Arch or Flow), supercomp and brass.
No Tubes require only a tiny amount of juice with conti protection tires. Tiny.

I've had two sets of Superstar wheels on Switch hubs. Both have been fine, with just a bit of trying required after more than a year's use. The oldest hubs must be on their fourth year with zero maintenance. I've also go some Hopes, which have also been fine. The Superstar Sentinel tubeless rims are excellent, and much cheaper than Stans.

went for Arch EX hope hoops on my rigid SS when I built it. Love them, and they can take the abuse of someone riding faster than they should on a rigid without the skills they should have to ride one.
