Tyres for Winter Event and WRT

Post by Dave42w »

So I'm an off road newbie riding a Shand Stoater that is normally running Marathon City Plus tyres.

Next year I plan to ride the Winter Event and the WRT.

I'd like to buy one set of tyres that can be used for both events if that is possible. They need to be folding. The frame can cope with 700c x 55mm

I am sure my routes will be conservative but also expect surprises.

So is it possible and what would you recommend? I did read Stuart's review of the On One tyres but wondered if a bigger than 40c tyre might allow me to float across all those fords ;-)

If a 2" Race King fits I'd go for that. Failing that then a 1.9" WTB Vulpine.

Thanks, looks like the Race King probably won't fit.

Can't see anyone with the WTB Vulpine in stock. Chain Reaction don't know when will be in stock

So maybe I should look for a 48-622 or a 45-622 but finding it difficult to find any

Doesn't look like there's much choice out there. I think Conti do a 48c or maybe it's 45c tyre that might do the job, can't remember the name but I'll have a look on-line later and post back ... if not I'd just buy the 40c gravel roads.

Edit: It was the cross ride I was thinking of ... 42c / 1.6" so not quite as big as I remembered.

Give or take how they're measured, rim width and how much clearance you want...

Schwalbe (usually measure a bit small IIRC):
Thunder Burt 29x2.1 (54c)
Smart Sam 700x40 (42 printed on sidewall), 700x45 (47 printed on sidewall), 29x2.1
Dirty Dan 29x2.0
(depending on the terrain) Marathon Mondial 700x40c, 28x1.75, 28x2.0 (not sure why they're labeled 28, they're printed 47/50-622)

Panaracer:
Fire Cross 700x45 (if you find these, let me know where...)
Soar 50-622
Comet 52-622, 54-622

Conti:
X-King and Race-King both come in 29x2.0
Mud-King 29x1.8
Cross RIDE 700x42

Maxxis:
Beaver 29x2.0
Crossmark 29x2.1 (52/53-622)

Surly:
Knard 700x41c

Clement:
The X'Plor range has some 40c tyres but the names are too complicated

Wow, thanks for all that work. I'm struggling with slow Internet on campsite in Cornwall this week.

I'd read about the Panaracer Fire cross but like you can't find any in stock. So those choices give me some hope!

The Race King has more volume than the X-King, so it might be worth checking the latter even if the Race King won't fit.

Nice long term review: http://scottrcmtb.blogspot.co.uk/2013/0 ... ction.html
